Re: [Announce] automatically synchronize your clock to GPS time

gps-clockd and other apps on nitapps.com should now work with the application manager (I put everything in user/tools). Enjoy.

Re: Your help needed in improving N810 GPS performance

The patch is no longer needed. It was only supposed to work until the end of February (it fixed a leap year bug). Even in February it apparently didn't help; the improvements people were seeing may...

Re: mplayer_1.0rc1-maemo.25

Another small problem is that many of the demo .avi videos included with N810 have an incorrect aspect ratio in mplayer. One example is Video/Majakka.avi.

Re: mplayer_1.0rc1-maemo.25

Serge,

Thank you very much for your work on mplayer. The new version does indeed work much better for divx files.

The only problem I still see is that flv files downloaded from youtube play...

Re: OS2008 v. 2.2007.51-3 impressions?

I believe OS2008 50.2 was already 4.0.1.

4.0 was the first OS2008 beta.

As an example, the version of osso-gpsd in 4.0.1 is 1.0.25. 50.2 had the same exact version.

Re: Is this the WiMAX Internet Tablet?

I think the conclusion was that the fix didn't actually fix anything. In any case, if you wait 7 more days, the fix won't be necessary. The leap year bug only affects days until the end of February.

Re: Another N810 review.

A few (~3) minutes after half a day _is_ the poor performance that others have reported. Modern GPS devices (including your Holux) get reliable cold fixes in about 30 seconds.

I also have an iQue...

Re: Buy.com vs. Amazon?

Amazon's return policy is much better. Buy.com switched to 14 days (compared to 30 days at Amazon), and the 14 days start to count from the day they ship the order, not from the day you receive it.

Re: N810 power on issue and the temperature theory

N810's max allowed temperature is 80C

[user@nokia ~]$ cat /sys/devices/platform/i2c_omap.1/i2c-1/1-0048/temp1_crit
80000

I doubt you are exceeding it.

Yeah, shouldn't be difficult to add. Stay tuned.

Re: [Announce] utility to display tablet's internal temperature

It turns out that the last site (maemostuff) was infringing on the maemo trademark. Nokia asked me to take it down (very nicely) and I did.

Re: Use your N810 as a light meter

Sorry but no. I believe talking through d-bus is the only option until Nokia open-sources its interface to BME (unlikely to happen).

[Announce] utility to display tablet's internal temperature

I wrote a utility to display N810's internal temperature. I think it should also work for N800 and N770. When idle, tablets generate almost no heat, so this sensor can also measure the ambient...

Use your N810 as a light meter

N810 has a light sensor above the camera. The sensor is fairly decent (resolution of 1 lux in 1-50k+ lux range), and is accessible through software. light-meter is a very simple command-line tool to...

Re: Theory about why GPS performs poorly

nvd_data is fed to the chip by gpsdriver. gpsdriver also saves chip state back to nvd_data whenever GPS is shut down.

Re: Theory about why GPS performs poorly

I was talking about something much simpler than full-blown A-GPS. If we simply figured out the format of nvd_data and inserted new ephemeris from the network regularly, it seems that cold starts (3+...

Re: Theory about why GPS performs poorly

Interesting. My B 1 is very different, but B 2 is mostly the same. Looks like B 1 may be the ephemeris and B 2 the almanac. Only problem is that 1153 bytes is not enough to hold the 15k bit message....

Re: Theory about why GPS performs poorly

They are a cell phone company. It is easier for them to put the same chip in all devices. Fewer suppliers, fewer drivers to write, etc.

Re: Theory about why GPS performs poorly

Also, one good test to see if B 1 is indeed the almanac is to see whether the data changes significantly over time. Almanac data should be fairly static (it is valid for 180 days).

Never mind my...

Re: Theory about why GPS performs poorly

Jukka also said he wasn't the maintainer of gpsdriver, so it is possible that the left hand at Nokia doesn't know what the right hand is doing :)

Ephemeris data is 600 bits per satellite, and the...

Re: [Announce] bash as the default shell

When you do 'sudo gainroot', you are dropped back to ash. I made 'sudo gainroot' backward compatible by popular demand, and that's how the original 'sudo gainroot' behaves (it forces /bin/sh on you).

Re: Theory about why GPS performs poorly

So, was it placebo effect? Are people who switched back to the original GPSD noticing slower fixes now?

I am still not 100% convinced the leap bug has no effect on the hardware. If N810 uses last...

Re: Wi-Fi speed on N800??

I have never seen my N810 transfer files faster than 700KB/s (8mbps) on the local network. This is with WRT54 access point, G mode.
