I am not sure but it could be the battery drain issue reported by some people. My N800 (OS2008 installed) barely gives me 24 hours with a single charge and that also if I don't use it in that period....

Looks like you have the 770, if so then it is probably the white screen of death (or WSOD) which is a hardware fault with the LCD driver. The OS would boot but the screen is unusable.

Granted I already have an n800 but this was an additional 770 which I got but had the WSOD. And you correct - one could still boot it and login via ssh etc.
Got another 770 from Tigerdirect recently...

Got a unit from expansys (US) 3 weeks back. One week of ownsership and got hit by the dreaded WSOD one morning. They were kind enough to issue a refund after the rma return.

I would try replacing the current MMC card with another in there to see if you could access it with the file manager while booting off the flash. Try copying/opening some kind of files like pictures...
