I'm not sure if it would work this way cos I never had tried it with hidden SSID's but still u can try
$ sudo iwlist wlan0 scan
It will list all networks with all the details, U can check if it...

I had the same problem,
Like slender wrote above, I figured that it would get slow due to any of the apps that would have a hook onto the phone app. like (maybe)extended call log some contact app...

It was from extras and it was the only app I installed at that time
(as it was the only new app in the extras at tht time :P ).
and I uninstalled that app only which gave me back my battery icon

Yupp same with me.. I lost the battery icon and reboot didn't work .. So I had to uninstall that app to get it bck.
