I've simmilar issue time ago and I've could avoid re-rebooting :) removing the battery...later I've could flash it simply pluging-in the USB and switching on the n900....

In my country my NM account says "In trial period"...I guess Nokia Messaging will be paying in short and I go back to my slow and heavy mail client...Really I don`t understand not, really is a shame....

I've had all those problems that have been posted here. In my case the solution has been to use a Nokia Messaging account in order to integrate my mails accounts. I've setted those in my N900 and now...

In fact, the widget works as you say if you have set "no Nokia Messaging accounts" (at least with Gmail or Nokia), then the widget shows the last unread mail headers.

I had same issue when I updated the FW. In my case the problem were Tweak Flash. I think Ovi has not recognized your N900!!:). I only had to change it in Tweak Flash and it ran fine...
