I have two N800's and got great use out of them. Excellent devices, but feeling underpowered now. I have moved on, and use a Playbook for day to day use. Movies, email, etc.

I've never used the Windows flasher, so can't tell what stage you're having issues with. It sounds like you are having trouble getting the N800 into update mode.

The future for the N8x0 devices is community support via Mer. There may be some community bug-fixes for Diablo too, but I think the more promising direction is Mer.

In Modest, go into Tools -> Settings -> Updating, and scroll to the bottom. There's an option to play a sound when email arrives.
