Have you tried installing Pidgin? I believe that they both use libpurple so you might find installing Pidgin first then retry extras works. seem to recall a similar issue myself.

Thanks for the response but I was meaning to use the bluetooth connection as I don't want to broadcast quite so widely & that approach eats the battery.

Might be worth checking if it works with Pidgin on your N900. might be a corrupt install. If a reboot and battery pull doesn't sort it then try a reinstall.
