The kill -9 xxxx command worked for me to kill it. I followed the advice and removed privoxy (which I wasn't using anyway), and I haven't seen "sh" run away since then. ...I think it worked.

Runaway process: "sh"
Has anyone else had this problem? Inexplicably, I occassionally (~15% of the time) get a runnaway process called "sh" which ramps CPU ussage up to 100% (whatever it can get). This runs battery life...

Looks like your openvpn tunnel is working just fine, but if you want the command prompt back, then you have to background the process with " &" (that's a space, then ampersand) after your command. ...
