Same problem, and pdq's solution worked for me as well. Full resynchro is the way to go.

Been planning to upgrade for the last one year. Research quite a lot. Got the N900 for:
- hardware & keyboard
- Linux (open nature)
- Internet browser
- VOIP (Skype integration)

I installed the Maemo 5 update Over the air and everything went fine. It restarted once and I haven't needed to restart my device since.
