My N900 can no longer sniff packets in promiscuous mode. It shows the device in promisc from ifconfig and responds perfectly to:

ifconfig wlan0 promisc
ifconfig wlan0 -promisc

It even shows...

OK. So I fixed it. I had to recreate the entire partition on the N900 using sfdisk.

sfdisk /dev/mmcblk1

then format:

mkfs.ext3 /dev/mmcblk1p1

now the partition shows up on all systems....

Thanks for the response! I'm using rootsh, so I've already run sudo gainroot.

Also the error wasn't "Invalid Command". It was "Invalid Argument".
