I'm using mine on the 3 network. I pay $29 for my calls cap and an extra $20 for a gig a month. You can get 2g for $20 as well if you agree to a 12 month contract.

I've mentioned this in like 5 different threads now, but you change the region to Australia through Settings > Date and Time > Time Zone. I don't know if that will affect your phone number issue, but...

You change the region to Australia by going to Settings > Date and Time > Timezone and then just click on Australia in the map.
Worked for me.

You can set the timezone to Australia. Is that what you're trying to do?
Just go to Settings > Date and Time > Timezone and then click on Australia.
