Using Mono on Maemo 5

Hi Everyone,

I'm completely new to Maemo and I've just got to know it via a link from the Nokia N900 site. I read some articles (mostly basic ones) that explain development for Maemo and there was also some comparison between Maemo's C++ and the .NET CF.

I have to admit, it was very interesting, although I haven't yet developed any Linux-based software yet. After reading some of the articles, I was thinking about whether Mono (http://mono-project.org) can run on Maemo, because if it could, it would be a great delight for all .NET developers.

I did some search on the forums, but all the threads I found were more than a few years old.

So, is it possible to run Mono on Maemo? If yes, what is its performace?

Thank you! :) I found that page, too, but it also seems dated since the screenshot there is from a Nokia 770.

But I assume that it will also work on the N900, if it did on its predecessor.

Thanks for the info :)

I don't think that counts as dated. :)

And N900 is not launched yet :)

Technically it's possible but someone needs to put some work into it. This includes creating up to date packages of mono and (more difficult) creating new language bindings to the Hildon framework. The available bindings are made for Maemo4 Hildon and need to be updated to the new Maemo5 API.

Everything needed is available as open-source code so it's just a matter of someone doing it :)

Getting mono working on N900 would be awesome and enable a bunch of Windows and Windows Mobile developers to get apps onto the platform.

me too

I'm developing at .NET since a couple of years. I know C++, but it's a long time ago. :-)

Although core code would be highly portable if Mono was packaged for Maemo5, you're still going to run into issues with the UI framework...you can't just develop a Windows app and hit recompile ;) You will need to specifically retarget your app UI for the Hildon framework.

Yes, MountainX, that is some good reading...food for thought.
