Sailfish absorb Mer?
People working with Mer working at Jolla for obvious reasons. But why keep Mer as Mer and not Mer as part of sailfish.
http://releases.merproject.org/~cars...014_vfinal.pdf Almost everything you read about Mer involves sailfish. And I know Mer is so that everyone who wants to build a mobile can use Mer but in the end. Mer get stonger and stronger connections to jolla and sailfish, what is the reason not to scape the name Mer and call it sailfish foundation? I might be in deep water here but what happens to Mer if jolla fails it's ones in a life time for Mer to break big. They should take the chance and support the brand. Sailfish core even. |
Re: Sailfish absorb Mer?
No, because Mer is not limited to Sailfish. And it shouldn't be.

Re: Sailfish absorb Mer?
My understanding is that Mer is most used as the basis for an OS for in car entertainment systems. The smartphone part is actually much more of a sideline.

Re: Sailfish absorb Mer?
Mer is a 100% open source project, Sailfish OS is not. Mer is Mer and Mer is part of Sailfish. Read this http://releases.merproject.org/~cars...014_vfinal.pdf
It explains a bit about what Mer is in relation to Jolla and check this http://gitweb.merproject.org/gitweb?o=age to see what changes have been made to Mer and by who. |

Yea, let's rename Linux to Android, but let it remain the same! After all, Linux is used by some
... Nah, rather not. |

Re: Sailfish absorb Mer?
Compare it with a kids name is not the same thing, and if you think so all parents get suggestions from friends and family but their choice is their own. Same with mer. It's not a demand it's more a question on my limited view of the mer project from customers perspective..
What happens with Nemo? Only Sailfish left or do we have anyone else building cool stuff on mer? Estel... Android and Linux? Worst example by far... It's probably illegal too. Either way I think it's a great move and I'm sure it will happen sooner or later or jolla will fork it and run their own branch. (if the two entities survives) |
Re: Sailfish absorb Mer?
As crazy as it seems I seem to agree with Dave, since Sailfish itself, was meant to be exactly what Mer is, a distribution for manufactures to build there own UI and system onto top of, which is exactly what Mer is. There both the same thing more or less. Or did I miss something here? I thought Jolla was the actual OS with swipe, android layer etc.
I thought libhybris there by default is what Sailfish has over Mer. |
Re: Sailfish absorb Mer?
It's always worth asking these questions - actually we discussed Mer and Jolla quite a bit at FOSDEM :)
Moving Mer into Sailfish would have pros and cons - feel free to discuss. I will suggest you look to the OSS ecosystem at company managed open-source projects for citations though (both for and against). MySQL, Nagios both spring to mind. Intel quietly support lots of OSS projects. Canonical has Ubuntu. RedHat has Fedora and now CentOS associations. Suse/OpenSUSE... Mer does currently have a number of other companies (and individuals) contributing - branding changes may affect that. Eg there's an upcoming Mer sprint that a company in Venice is organising. We also know that a number of companies are watching to see how things go with Jolla. Would they be more or less likely to be involved in an OSS project where another company had the reigns? It's also true Mer has had less attention from me, Carsten and others recently. However if one of our major "customers" (who also hired us) fails to deliver a product then our vision ("making it easy to make devices") would be at risk. So we had to prioritise our time - sleep deprivation led to some slowdown in Mer contributions and maintenance. Now the Jolla device is out we're looking to make time to revitalise the project. FWIW I have no plans to rename Mer :) HTH |
Re: Sailfish absorb Mer?
So Mer will be Mer for the timing being.
So what is the purpose about Mer if not to be a part of released consumer electronics. If people contribute to it from time to time it's great, but at the same time nothing to give any notice to the world at large. The issue I'm bringing to the table is more about how to make Mer and sailfish bigger and not the to remove its existence in any way. Yeah , they watching sailfish and automatically also Mer. But mainly sailfish since it's bring the gold to the table, consumer products. That's why I was asking of a game changer to boost the interest from potential watchers. I doubt operators or vendors thinking. Hmm,Mer looks good lets build our own os since it's already available they might go for that. So I'm not sure what the ultimate goal is with Mer but I think it's now or never. Thank you for your thoughts lbt. Much appreciated! |

Re: Sailfish absorb Mer?
Was i right or was i right. IT Will absorbing Mer unofficially :D
Btw. What's the plan with tizen Mer? Don't really get that part. |
Re: Sailfish absorb Mer?
Mer is a (open source) core. Sailfish is built with that at its core encompassing closed source and proprietary technologies. It's an implementation (key word here). Two separate definitions.

Re: Sailfish absorb Mer?
That was not his question I think. Jolla is contributing because it's the core of sailfish. Dave wanted to know, if there's anything other that sailfish devices.
Isn't AsteroidOS also based on Mer? |

It's the reason why Jolla managed to fast prototype and test a Sailfish OS Smartwatch. They leveraged the hard work of porting mer to that specific hardware from AsteroidOS, and "only" had to implement the sailfish-specific UI layer they wanted to explore and play around with. But I think that's basically everything that is more or less alive currently. Nemo Mobile is a small scale community effort. KDE Plasma Active wanted also to use Mer as a base for their Vilvadi tablet, but as the whole project went bust... Speaking of KDE Plasma Active, Purism has decided NOT to use Mer for their Librem5 phone. Among other reasons : they wanted to share a common core with their laptop OS which uses a Debian core. And also, as they want to design and built a smartphone from the ground up (instead of relying on manufacturer-provided ready-to-use PCB designs), and build it with opensource in mind, they definitely not need android drivers adatpation like libhybris and thus don't need Mer that much. |
Re: Sailfish absorb Mer?
Any commits to mer lately?
