Nemomobile glacier UI. anyone seen it ?

just saw a tweet on tweeter by Andrea Bernabei and checked nemo's latest glacier UI. its simply amazing. Nemo team has done an amazing job. some screenshots by qwazix (mostly he's doing the UI things i think) LINK and some more UI images from twitter.

Links: 1 2.

I simply love the new lock screen. dying to check this on my N900. When its releasing ?

Original Glacier UI mockup is done by hurrian. Qwazix and me specced it and made SVG versions of the UI. Final UI will be a bit more flat than the first mockup. You can check all infos on Grog Blog.

Thanks for the mention, but the work in the post you link to is Hurrian's, not mine.

I do have the honour to be lead designer for Nemo, but the work is collaborative and many thanks go to all our contributors, including Morpog for specs and input, sledges for input community/social and code, faenil for the work on wayland and components, locusf for work on theming maliit, the jolla guys for middleware and help, zbenjamin for working on bugs and I'm terribly sorry if I forget someone.

Of course many people have contributed to nemo before, I'm just mentioning the guys we are making Glacier together.

If you'd like to chip in, we have lots of work for you. Come aboard.

Its a shame I still not active :( But my daily works make me to lazy code at freetime. But I plan to not work 80% instead to get some time over for FOSS instead. Because thats what I want todo.

Anyway is there any never nemo image since June?

Morpog 2013-10-01 20:07

Re: Nemomobile glacier UI. anyone seen it ?

June release was last stable release on x11 + Qt4 + qtcomponents.
No official release since then, as nemo was moved to wayland, all apps were ported to Qt5 and qtcomponents-qt5. Also glacier UI work started since then.

Though there are unofficial snapshots for N950/N9 and VM. There are links on Nemomobile wiki but those are outdated very fast. Uptodate stuff can be found on #nemomobile irc or by building an image yourself.

Very slick looking UI. With app menu, is it going to be a possibility to put favourites at the top? Just in case you have lots of apps installed.

Especially like the meamo.org notifications :D

not anymore, don't know if you've seen my video :)

It's just a button so far, but I spent most of the time setting up the whole repo, theme handling for dynamic theme switching and utilities for easy components development, so the other ones will come fast enough ;)

The work is inspired from Qt for Tizen components, but most of the stuff has been modified quite a lot :)

You'll be surprised ;)

Would like to try a late (unofficial) snapshot on my n900. Any words on the planned release timeline?
Great UI!

Glacier looks really beautiful, and I like the consistent shape of the icons a lot (jollas different shapes look slightly messy to me).

BTW: Are you using a serif font for the UI?!?

Morpog 2013-10-03 13:05

Re: Nemomobile glacier UI. anyone seen it ?

Nope, that widget gallery header is from Qt quick controls components example app. Has nothing to do with glacier UI. We use open sans in glacier.

i would love that on n900 , maybe a patched hildon with that interface(i've tried all nemo versions on n900 , they're too slow to be usable even emmc with sd swap) ,willing to pay for it if someone makes that posible

Re: Nemomobile glacier UI. anyone seen it ?

Circular spinners are way overused. Let's be different!

shmerl 2013-10-09 15:43

Re: Nemomobile glacier UI. anyone seen it ?

If you don't want a shape spinner (circular, square etc.), you can use shape morpher. I.e. design one shape to be beginning, and other shape to be the end, and the progress/activity can be be displayed as morphing. I didn't see such activity indicators used often.

Another idea is to use a 3D style indicator, but that should fit with 2D design well.

http://www.transum.org/software/sw/s...cosahedron.gif

I like how WolframAlpha for example uses a miniature game of life as an activity indicator.

ARJWright 2013-10-10 02:36

Re: Nemomobile glacier UI. anyone seen it ?

Let me get this out of the way. This is nice. There's nothing reaching too far here. But, it plays with the methods and behaviors many already know, and refines a good bit of what needed to be touched. Impressive, and one can see the work in some of the details.

That said, I don't know if its more of a step back than a half step forward.

I saw/see the N9 as a step towards using the actvity stream as the center of the interaction. Fastlane seems like a step forward in that wise. If this were a full step forward, its leaving the icon-first though, and using the activity stream, gesture-led initiation, and then search/multi-task as that layering-speak UI.... ahhhhh... smiling, excited.

Gosh, I've got to break out my design chops and do something alongside Glacier UI. Seriously, good stuff here. I just see a bit more.

If my attention span can maintain it a bit... I'll go in on this.

Part of the reason they are so often used is that they are easily designed and easily performant. If something is a simple circle, you can load a graphic (or design an effect/shader) and simply rotate it.

If it's more involved (like the suggestion a few posts up), you generally either have to do horrible crap like qt-components did and load each frame of the image in sequence based on a timer, or load an animated image, or something. Neither are really appealing options.

*edit* especially considering Qt 5.2 has the capability to run animations that are simplistic enough entirely on the render thread: http://doc-snapshot.qt-project.org/q...-animator.html

qwazix 2013-10-25 07:45

Re: Nemomobile glacier UI. anyone seen it ?

I wouldn't imagine that using colorAnimation on 4 standard qml Rectangles would be less performant than loading an image and rotating it.

I didn't say it wasn't, although creating four rectangles (and four animations) plus bindings and property settings between them is a lot more work, but then we're talking on a rather minute-level, and for a component like a busy indicator, that sort of consideration doesn't matter. On the other hand, if you're working on something like Label, where a bad property binding can be the difference between 0.x ms and 2ms to create a single Label -- that sort of thing does matter when you're creating tens or hundreds of them in a typical application, or while panning.

I'm not drawing direct comparisons here, I'm just noting that performance is (or should always be) a concern when designing something. Otherwise you end up with compromises somewhere further down the line (precreating, caching, prestarting applications, or just being slow...)

It seems different people perceive flat in different ways. This mockup is flat in my eyes (or at least, almost flat).

Nevertheless I'm glad you like it.

P.S. non-flat by my standards: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...ome_Screen.png

The best thing about this UI is that it is all black as default. Just like N900. I hate all these extremely bright UI as in iOS and Android. Even at lowest brightness. Hurts my eyes.

i have an idea about multi tasking
to close an app user should just tap and hold on a minimized app
and to close all apps, after holding a finder for a longer time, a dialogue would appear asking whether to close all the apps

Let's refine that, because some apps might actually benefit from that in such an app view:
- tap and hold on the top left or right corner of the app in the multi-tasking view and it will close
- tap and hold anywhere else on the app window and get options for other stuff (refresh view, look for updates, answer/reject, play/pause/next/previous, capture app screenshot, send/share, etc.)
- tap and hold on any spaces in between the app windows and get the prompt to refresh all, close all, delete apps, and backup

Nice idea. Appreciate an ability to think through it and see what else is there.
