Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

fanastic news! it covers even more than Google Nav (US-only)
http://www.sygic.com/index.php/en/pr...mo-phones.html

All currently available regional apps for other operating systems are in progress to be available on Nokia Maemo:
Australia & New Zealand, South East Asia (incl. Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia)
Brazil, Colombia, North America (incl. USA, Canada & Mexico), US
Complete Europe, UK & Ireland, Russia
Gulf Countries (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates)
"We are happy to announce the compatibility of Sygic Mobile Maps with Nokia's new Maemo 5 OS. Currently we are in the phase of quality assurance performing final tests. We are working hard to launch it for sales by the end of 2009, but we won't hesitate to make this sooner anytime when ready." comments Anna Hurbanic, Sygic's PR Manager.

Does anyone know if you can/will get (or will be able to subscribe to) traffic reports w/Sygic? As I am in my car a lot driving from client to client, this is an invaluable tool I currently use often (in Los Angeles especially) w/TomTom on my Treo 750.

Never heard of them, are they any good?
How do they compare to google maps or Ovi maps seeing as there is no google maps at the moment...

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

Sygic:

No satellite layer
No traffic layer (very important because you want to know if there are traffic congestion LIVE so you can take alternative route which Sygic doesn't provide because it's FIXED or downloaded!!)
No female voice as alternative
$80

This is why Google Map Nav is SICK!! It updated LIVE for traffic. Of course you need 3G all the time. The reason Sygic doesn't need 3G and load fast because it's NOT LIVE!! So it can't do things like update traffic.

NOOOOOOOOOO

I've never used Sygic but I'd prefer a hybrid solution: have the maps offline
and optional (!) online access to live data (traffic, POI) or satellite images.
I hope they (or any other Maemo solution) will offer those features in the future.

Agreed. This is what I'm looking for and exactly what I currently have running TomTom on a Treo 750 (which is being replaced by the N900...I hope).

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

Sygic started off a couple years ago as some one-guy-project or so :p They were and still are quite small but their nav system covers every major player on the market. Sygic Drive runs on Windows Mobile, Android, UIQ, S60, even iPhone I believe and now Maemo.

It's not the best available, but fulfills everything a nav system has to fulfill. Optically it's drawing alot from TomTom, since it started off as a TomTom clone ;) Sygic has been bought by Teleatlas a couple years ago and Teleatlas themselves belong to TomTom. So it now even became it's bigger cousins little fellow :)

No, Sygic doesnt offer any subscription based additional functionality other than a (I believe) monthly updated speed camera database. They are just too new in the business and still too small.

They are completely different to Google Maps. Sygic Drive is what TomTom or Navigon or Garmin is, an onboard offline navigation solution where you put that and that many megabytes or gigabytes of map data onto your device/memory card and that's the data the program accesses. As mentioned, optically it started off as a complete TomTom rip-off clone and still looks quite similar. It's not fully matured yet but it's cheap and cheerful, offers everything a navigation prog has to offer. And is owned by the major mapping company in the world so there will always be map updates ;) Cant compare to Ovi Maps, don't know it yet.

Edit: Don't know Ovi maps I mean. I'm running around with some fancy robot in my pocket at the moment ;-)

Sygic announces the compatibility of its Mobile Maps turn-by-turn navigation application with the new Nokia Maemo mobile phones. The application will get ready for sale from Sygic web site e-shop by the end of 2009.
And it THAT easy to create a gps app. because they say "end of 2009". so wheres Tomtom, a decent Ovi Maps, Garmin... i mean am gonna pay for it!!! JUST WANT TO SPEND SOME CASHHH!

I suggest we all ask those companies whether they will support Maemo.
Does anybody know their email adresses or phone numbers for such inquiries?

TomTom is based on Linux, so it should not be difficult to port it.

Sygic Drive for Symbian is amazing application with very good maps. If the maemo port is as good as that and cheap, it will surelly be the first application for maemo I will buy.

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

Well, we shall see if this app uses all that Fremantle has to offer or is just a "pound to fit and paint to match" port.

I rarely use turn by turn as 98% of my driving is over the same ol' routes. Real time traffic input and re-routing capabilities is what I do need.

It is good to see commercial software becoming available. :)

Thanks for the heads up Titan

Nothing can beat Google LIVE traffic update, satellite image layer, street layer, and STREET NAMES announcement.....EVEN TOM TOM don't have street name announce?? That's not good.

We get it - you like Google Navigation Software. I doubt they'll be in a hurry to produce a maemo version.

We have Google live traffic layer now in Maemo Mapper. I use it everyday with my 810 and before that an N800 with a Holux BT GPS.

Nothing beats an app that dynamically re-routes if the live traffic information warrants it.

...But most of all, nothing beats an OS that allows you to build an app yourself. :)

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

The main thing stopping us from just taking a geolocation aware browser and using Google Maps is the constant polling will result in a temporary block from Google Maps. Otherwise geolocation support + Google Maps + constant refreshing + something to vocalize the directions [e.g. gmap to gpx + flite] is pretty darn close. :D

It wont offer anything of what Fremantle has to offer. I doubt it being hardware accelerated (in the beginning) seeing that Sygic looks exactly the same on every platform is being offered on.
But we have a fully working and somewhat established gps navigation solution available on our devices. Cool!

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

I'm choosing between the N900 and either HD2 or neoTouch200 WM mobile based systems(sorry). One of the things that held me back in relation to the N900 was the lack of a good GPS app that doesn't require 3G connection. I am very pleased Sygic has released this app, and that it's so soon after the N900 announcement. Excellent. Having read a few reviews on line Sygic seems to function even better than e g Garmin XT in certain regions. Very encouraging.

It can be very annoying listening the name of all the streets. Voice should be only to give turn by turn navigation.

Nothing can beat something that will help you out when lost in the middle of no-where with no phone signal.
For most serious GPS nav users, the Google nav is a non-starter for that reason.

Even with Ovi Maps I believe you can download them from Nokia's server and load them onto your device.

Google Navigation from Droid has been "ported" to the G1

as soon as we have a running Dalvik port for Maemo, we could run Google Navigation+Voice, too.

Sygis is preparing traffic info service - technically it is ready, but we still negotiate with the service providers in different countries. We will definitelly inform our audiences, once it is in place, incl. all necessary info.
