Jolla TABLET User Experience Thread

I thought we could start separate thread for Jolla Tablet user experiences. (similar than for Jolla phone)

This would keep delivery-, etc. threads clean.

Some external reviews:
http://www.engadget.com/2015/10/11/l...-jolla-tablet/
http://www.techanics.com/mobile/joll...id-app-support
http://www.argyllfreepress.com/2015/...tional-swipes/

Give your own review here and discuss about Jolla TABLET experiences!

Edit:
It would be also interesting to know what Applications people have installed Successfully to Jolla Tablet outside Jolla store and where to get it.

no jolla tablet outside store until all preorders are shipped, only some rare second hand ones.

Re: Jolla TABLET User Experience Thread

I got mine yesterday and used only the browser for a short while. The display is ok, but the speed is compared to the phone not increased (slow "hickup" scrolling in the browser, etc)

I'm thinking about selling it here as I do not really know what to to with a tablet in general, and especially with the Jolla as there are almost no applications available ... and if I want to run Android applications it's better to buy an Android tablet.

EDIT: what's a bit sad is that it is not possible to sync application settings with the phone. So either I configure e.g mail by hand or I have to copy the config via ssh. Nothing a normal user would ever do.

I think next update should help with that(at least one Jolla sailor said something like that).

Well, there is this:

[Request] [Jolla Tablet] [Idea] Jolla tablet <-> Jolla smartphone pairing/communication

It has 243 votes and is tagged with the roadmap tag, but so far I haven't really heard about any actual progress on this being made.

Re: Jolla TABLET User Experience Thread

@MartinK, @gaelic, what about making a backup on jolla phone, copy file to Tablet and restore backup?
Not having a tablet yet, I was planning to do it like that, so it would be great to hear if it is working!

Edit: Since 1.1.9.x there is even "copy to memory card" in backup-settings as a pulley option, so i suspect it is planned by Jolla to take out the memory card with backupfile from phone and stick it into the tablet to restore?

That's an interesting idea! And it should work, at least "on paper" given that the backup software should be the same on both ends. :)

But this is still something like a first-time-setup thing as backup restore IIRC overwrites any data currently in place. The question I have linked to is more about long term bidirectional synchronisation ,data sharing and cooperation (forwarding calls, messaging sessions, web pages, etc.) between your Jolla phone and tablet.

hemiwi 2015-10-14 14:38

Re: Jolla TABLET User Experience Thread

Did that already on Mon evening.

I imported my backup via mSDcard and all my accounts were there. Unfortunately i forgot that you have to install all Jollas app (mail, calender etc). So when i then went into the mail app all the server settings where empty.

Try it like this:
install mail, calendar and pretty anything from Jolla store you need and then run the backup. Maybe you are lucky and your emailsettings are there.

Re: Jolla TABLET User Experience Thread

No for a question that is burning myself (if noob question sorry)....

I read the How to install video / audio codec thread (and if i remember right did that on the pone 2 years ago).

Since i cant install warehouse / openrepos due to the architecture of the tablet is it safe to install the codecs via shell? If so which are the latest one? Or better wait?

Please help i really would like to see some movies or series when travelling. Thanks

Or has anyone found a player that works out of the box on the tablet?

Re: Jolla TABLET User Experience Thread

Just started to find tablet apps from https://openrepos.net/

I have installed successfully:

Filecase
https://openrepos.net/content/cepiperez/filecase-0
-seems to work (after 5 minutes of use)

Webpirate
https://openrepos.net/content/dax/webpirate
-Works! I opened youtube and downloaded one music video and played video using Jolla Gallery
-Thanks for developers as I tend to download stuff for sdcard to be able to watch some videos whenever there is no network coverage

Tweetian
https://openrepos.net/content/veskuh...an-sailfish-os
- Opens up.
- I don't have account so This was just a basic test for others interested...

Sailorgram
https://openrepos.net/content/dax/sailorgram
- Install ok and opens
- does not send sms? At least after one try. Need to try again.

Question: Should these noarch.rpm work on tablet?
For example:
helsinki-transit-live
https://openrepos.net/content/otsalo...i-transit-live

I think I read it somewhere that backup from Jolla phone should work for tablet.

Just noticed this:

Has this already been here somewhere? :)

Just got mine today. Feels much more solid than I was expecting. Lastu case is a great design, but mine's a bit wonky - it doesn't sit straight on the screen.
There are a few x86 builds in the store, but strangely no warehouse yet. Anyone know where the source is for that. Might try to build Hangish later on.

There are now much more pixels being moved so I guess fast scrolling means graphical card being overloaded - maybe this chipset is still fairly new to underlying Android drivers and they could be optimized in the future?

Then again, I tried many browsers on the phone and noted that the scrolling performance differs a lot depending on application.

For example native Webpirate is a full featured browser and looks attractive and aligned with Jolla alternative philosophy but I am set back by the scrolling performance.

The Firefox browser is the best performing browser on the Sailfish Phone, despite it running on Alien Dalvik.

Could you try install Firefox on the tablet and see if your experience with Firefox is better?

I know this is not the point but we must not ignore that Jolla is pushing Sailfish to be the alternative platform of choice on which to run your favorite Android apps.

Also I would be interested to know how much memory the Alien Dalvik virtual machine is reporting. 1GB?

Thanks and good luck with the eventual sale :p

Re: Jolla TABLET User Experience Thread

Tried some new applications:

Falldown
https://openrepos.net/content/walokra/falldown
- works but really fast tilt sensitivity or maybe I too old. :)
- Does not expand to the whole screen but leaves around 1-1,5 cm from the screen edges? Is this in purpose?

Textractor
https://github.com/skvark/Textractor...ses/tag/v0.6-0
- Installed and it seems to work at least with finnish language.
- should be coming to Jolla Store near you

Edit:
Some corrections to falldown description

Re: Jolla TABLET User Experience Thread

I have the tablet for a couple of days now. And I quite like it. The hardware feels solid. Way better than my jolla phone did. (blown up speaker, dead pixels, dead vibration thingie) but time will tell how this one holds up.

I am not a typical power user but sometimes like to fiddle around a bit. I really hope that most of the phone apps get ported soon. Although the android experience is pretty good when it comes to all the things that I need. (social networking, following sports etc)

Everything could be a bit faster but I've read here and there that they're working on it at Jolla. Only thing that does not work roperly is the gps. It keeps showing me at my old work lacation probably because of the a gs but so far no luck clearing of overwriting this. Found a couple of threads about this, but no way to fix this yet. If anyone has tips?

So in general I'm happy. Will try to get more into detail the next couple off days.

Re: Jolla TABLET User Experience Thread

Hey guys,

I've repackaged my personal ambience (black and white, same as ambience-allblack for Jolla phone) for the Tablet (noarch.rpm).
Would someone with a Jolla tablet have a go at installing my ambience - I'd really like to know that it installs and is usable once on the device...?

Ambience-AllBlack available on Openrepos (noarch.rpm for tablet & Jolla phone) - https://openrepos.net/sites/default/...4-1.noarch.rpm

Thanks to bertjefred for testing! :)

All feedback appreciated, good or bad!

Regards,

Re: Jolla TABLET User Experience Thread

I'm bored of the whiney thread. Let's get this one going again. #jtabclub

Anyone else find their tablet turns itself off occasionally if it's not connected to the charger for a few hours, especially overnight? I sometimes pick mine up and it's off, but when I boot it there's plenty of charge left. It's also a bit unwilling to come on, and connecting it to a charger seems to help.

Re: Jolla TABLET User Experience Thread

What you could do is use a small script to create a log of the power usage; that way you can see how it behaves when not in use.

I run this from cron every 30 minutes in my device:

Code:

[nemo@Jolla ~]$
[nemo@Jolla ~]$ cat bin/powerlog.sh
#!/bin/bash

battery=$(upower -d | grep percentage | awk '{print $2}')
date=$(TZ='Europe/Helsinki' date "+%d.%m.%Y %H:%M")
echo "$date  -->  $battery"
[nemo@Jolla ~]$
[nemo@Jolla ~]$

Re: Jolla TABLET User Experience Thread

Basil's System Monitor app should give a good idea of battery levels. That has a daemon that records a week's worth of levels in a database. I built it for x86 but the battery level wasn't working. Luckily, CODeRUS had given the correct battery device name in an issue, so it works now on my github. I suppose the Cell traffic output should be disabled and hidden on non-GSM devices too.

I've not pushed to openrepos before, but I'll give it a go.

Edit: I've uploaded it, and sent a PR to basil with the changes that should find the correct battery device on each device. If he publishes it himself then I'll remove it.

Re: Jolla TABLET User Experience Thread

So my system monitor output shows CPU usage of 78% when idle, which disappears when it resumes so I haven't been able to see which process is doing it. The detail is all in the 'system processes' category.

Hi. Just reposting from another thread as it was suggested this thread is more appropriate. I agree. Also, hope to get mine this week.

Question for those of you that have gotten a tablet. Are you able to down load apps from Jolla store? Are they the same as phone apps? If so how do they scale on screen. Same question wrt android apps. Thanks!

EDIT: If you see some interesting differences, some screen shots might be good to show.

Yes and No - The Apps are the same Apps, but they have to be compiled to .noarch/.i486 AFAIK to work and also to be shown in the Jolla Store on the Tablet. Because of that there are many Apps not avialiable for the Jolla Tablet which are avialiable for the Jolla Phone.
Well I am not an app developer but you/an app developer has also to adjust his App-UI so the App will automatically work on (any) bigger screen size.

It seems that all the Android Apps in the Jolla Store on the Phone are also shown in the Jolla Tablet Store. But on a quick look I noticed that e.g. the Android App 'Punainen Risti' is shown in the Phone Store but is not avialiable in the Tablet Store. Maybe some Apps are not shown because they are not compatible with Android 4.4 on which the Alien Dalvik on the Tablet is based on.
