Help needed with reflashing N900 because of virus

Hello people of the community,

Since I might have a big virus on my N900 I want to reflash.

The link on this site is however dead. I already filled a Bugzilla report
however no response. This was more than a week ago.

Can somebody help me with this?

Kind regards

What has made you reach that conclusion?

If you mean that your Windows computer has detected a virus when connected as a Mass Storage device, then I don't think you need to reflash. Just use an anti-virus on Windows to clean it.

What is the link for this report?

If you really must reflash, use the Wiki page for Repositories to find images, and the Flashing page for the flashing procedure.

I too am curious about why you think your N900 might have a virus.

Get your flashing files here: http://web.archive.org/web/201311170...ev/nokia_N900/

Sicelo, the bug report is here: https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12748

Re: Help needed with reflashing N900 because of virus

I am also curious.
this is a first if correct.
though I highly doubt the n900 has an actual virus.
Who in their right mind would take the time to create a "big virus" for the n900?
It's like making a virus for the Commodore 64.

Even if done out of a desire to be malicious......it would hardly impact enough people for the twisted enjoyment.
That is just along the lines of the mindset behind a virus creation...

If it were a "big virus" that was apparently openly attacking and disabling n900's ...why haven't other reports been noted yet?
unless this is the very first report...but I have doubts there too.

most likely it is the host machine os.
How knowledgeable is the n900 user with the maemo platform and devices?
I wonder, since it is has been common knowledge for many many years that the download links here for the firmware has been dead.
Has the owner of this n900, bought or inherited the device from someone else...and inherited the past owners problems....
or at best ...
hasn't done a firmware reflash since (since it is obvious) the links for the firmware here went down ...so many years ago ...and the n900 in question is simply in need of a fresh flash?

edit:
Most likely... as has been mentioned... Windows host machine perhaps found a file upon establishing a connection and scan of the mass storage of a virus in the mass storage ... a file or program that would impact Windows....but that has no bearing or affect ...and means nothing to maemo linux.
Just remove the offending file....or reflash

Re: Help needed with reflashing N900 because of virus

I am the owner of this Nokia N900 since 2011.

This has nothing to do with my indeed Windows pc.

Still using it. Recentely I tried to install Yappari v0.0.28. ( http://www.mynokian900.com/yappari-v...my-nokia-n900/).

Although I knew this probably would not work since the change in encryption for WhatsApp I tried it anyway.

Nowhere I the repository or programs direction I can find Yappari.

Recently It occurs that some people call me and I see the number of one particular contact.

What also somethimes will happen. I have Wireless Lan disabled by default. Sometimes the browser will suddenly start up or wireless will be suddenly on.

So there is something very wrong.

If the link on the main home page is dead. Why not remove it or change it with the link I just found in the forum.

Hope I can trust this link and it is working.

Thanks for the link. I hope reflashing will solve this problem. It think it is indeed a virus or security breach.

Unfortunately I am not that familiar with Maemo / Linux to easily solve this or detect this.

So reflashing will be the best solution I think.

I do however work in IT as a software tester. So I am not completely without knowledge.

I think I had a wifi turning on on my N900 years ago, and found out that it was interlinked to some other networking process that turned it on.

Sorry I cannot remember what it was, but in the end I thought it was just a bug.

Re: Help needed with reflashing N900 because of virus

as far as whatsapp goes.
Unless some magic unicorn has come along...
Whatsapp has effectively closed it's doors to hacking it for the n900.
Telegram works with pidgin ...that is about as good as it gets.

Being in IT helps I am sure...
But Linux and especially maemo are a different breed of cow than windows or mac or android...
what applies to them....what fundamentals they follow ...
does not apply to us.

as far as removing the obsolete links goes....
that is up to the site maintainer-ship here.
there most obviously must be issues with its removal...or it would have been done so day 1

"Hope I can trust this link and it is working."
?
they are the official files.
they were moved to the internet archive on purpose.
they work.
everyone else here uses them and has trusted them for years.
what would be the point of referring you to a bunch of necessary files to deceive you?

Rather ...you should be wondering if you can trust a vulnerable http as the link to your obsolete and outdated yappari page you linked ...
I would suggest reading through talk maemo here on whatsapp and yappari....since this place IS where all the conversation goes on...concerning what works and what doesn't...
and you will find yappari hasn't worked in about a year now...

Manatus. Thanks for your reply.

This issue with wireless lan is only recently. I do not think it is your bug.

I think it is someone getting data and or location from my phone

As far as the dead link I can understand. Good to know that I might be able to use telegram.

What however the weird thing is that this Yappari v0.0.28 is not to be found on the phone after installing.

People calling me and I see some other contact.

Sometimes wireless lan is activated. I am pretty certain I am hacked.

So I will soon reflash.Hoping to lose this.

However if my pc is also hacked it will be difficult to reflash. MD5 could help.

Re: Help needed with reflashing N900 because of virus

It is most likely an aspect of the yappari program that was modified by scorpius..
some script is running but as far as a gui "showing" yappari running...that may not be visible...
there have been other programs that have behaved thus in the past...
running in background instead of foreground.
