wayfinder (maps application) on Nokia N8x0 - request to remove license

Hello,
not sure if may people still use the maps application on N8x0 devices.

Wayfinder did open source a map application, however there are no plans to open source the application in OS2008.

I did just posted a request to simply remove the license check from the provided maps application so that people who want still can use this after their license expired .

If you are interested please chirp in here:

I use my n810 for car entertainment with poor GPS functions. I'm willing to buy license if wayfinder update their GPS/Map datas. I paid money for this tablet 2 years ago and they let it die. Screw this.

We've already covered this. They aren't going to do it.

I'd suggest Maemo Mapper and the Open Street Maps. The maps are continually updated and it's all free. Check out http://fragostech.com/MaemoMapper/ for a HowTo.

The map program was much better than the rest (since it was optimized for the tablet), and nothing else really caught on. Using raster maps is terrible, I much prefer vector based.

Uhm, sorry but it was anything but optimised. They couldn't be bothered to write a native, optimised app so what they shipped is essentially a "port" of their Java version (including vm embedded in the executable) with all the great performance that implies.

In fact on the 770 using it would often make the device busy enough to trigger watchdog reboots :-(

Okay, then I find it much more useable than the other stuff we have available to use. And why are you talking about it on the 770? It's not surprising it would be slow on such an old device.
And by 'optimized', I meant that the buttons actually are finger sized and easy to use if you are driving. Navit does not do this very well (in fact it does it terribly since navigating the menu is so bad), and maemo mapper is essentially useless to me if I ever go out of range, and the map jumps all over the place. In wayfinder I at least had voice directions.

I originally bought it when it first came out as the "Navigation kit for Nokia 770". At least I got a bluetooth GPS out of it.

I guess it depends on what you compare it against. My yardstick was the original TomTom GO (already 2 years old at the time) which ran rings around 770+Navicore (and even N810+Wayfinder two years later) both performance and features-wise and was actually running on lesser hardware.

And when you compare the 770+Navicore or N810+Wayfinder to MaemoMapper, the two former options run RINGS around the latter. Sorry, but raster-based mapping/navigation with a user-hostile interface fails miserably against vector-based navigation applications with far more user-friendly interfaces.

I know there are other "map" options, thank you.

Personally I find the "Wayfinder/map" tool simply the most use full for MY current situation, seen I only use it for "emergency gps" (= I do not have an idea upfront what route I need and pulling data over 3G here is really expensive ).

The point of this thread was not to decide which tool was better, I simply wanted to see if there are here still users for which the maps application routing option has a (limited) usefulness (like for me) and if so, then it would be nice if they add this here .
