Apple files for operating system embedded ads patent

http://www.ipwatchdog.com/2009/10/22...ising/id=6761/

Some highlights, my emphasis in bold:

"The operating system is configured to present one or more of the advertisements to users of the computer device. In some implementations, the operating system can disable one or more functions during the presentation of the advertisements and then enable the function(s) in response to the advertisements ending. That is, the operating system can disable some aspect of its operation to prompt the operator to pay attention to the advertisement."

"In an attempt to ensure that the user is actually watching and/or listening to the advertisement content, the method can include a step for verifying user presence and giving proper credit (e.g., time for using the operating system, time for using the application program, time extension credit). In some implementations, the advertisement presentation module can prompt the user to confirm that he or she is reviewing the content (e.g., paying attention to the advertisement) being presented (e.g., the user is prompted to click a certain button, click a certain object or area on the screen, press a particular key or keys). In some implementations where the computer device is a cell phone or music player, the user may be prompted to press a certain button or keypad key in order to confirm that they are paying attention. In one implementation, the approaches for verifying user presence can be made progressively more aggressive if the user has failed a previous test. For example, after the user fails the test the first time, the subsequent tests can be made to appear more frequently or at varying times. As another example, the test(s) can be made more subtle so as to render them more difficult to perceive, such as by reducing the size of a message box on the screen, or by making an audio prompt more similar to the advertisement in which it is inserted. If the user fails the test in step the method can perform step over again; that is, the entire advertisement can be played again while the operating system maintains the function(s) in a disabled state. As another example, the user’s failure can first result in any available extension(s) being consumed (compare step), and only thereafter is an advertisement played in its entirety."

"In some implementations, a user may dismiss an advertisement presentation prior to completion, for example, by clicking on the advertisement (or on an unoccupied screen area outside the advertisement if the advertisement presentation occupies only a portion of the screen), which may prompt the processor or the log to record such an action so as to debit the user accordingly for the unfinished presentation."

Interested to see how the apple fans spin this one.

Note the question mark at the end of the title of this speculative piece, although the screenshot turned out to resemble some of the Harmattan concepts presented at the recent Maemo Summit.

I think this is for a variant of their tablet.

Either that, or they're going to implement some sort of copy protection on their OS and engage the ad mechanism when someone runs a pirated version :D

Seriously? So if this were a music player then it would just stop a song, show me an ad, and wait until I click through the ad to start the music again? This is seriously the most ridiculous thing I have read in a while. If I knew a product had this in it I wouldn't even want it if it were free.

Re: Apple files for operating system embedded ads patent

So, if there is an advertisement and I'm also doing something else on the machine I am discredited but if the device shows an advertisement and a wall of LCD screens each with a different porn movie the advertisement counts as watched? This is counterproductive with convergence. What if I'm too busy to view the advertisement? What if the advertisement contains inappropriate content (gotta love ads about menstruation during dinner, or TV program about medical operations during dinner...). It is always me, the user, who is to blame and gets discredited? Nice way of treating your cattle.

I don't know about you guys but when theres football on TV and its break after 45 minutes I go take a leak to get that beer out and grab a new one, come back to hear the analyst's sob story, figure its too boring and go wash the dishes, replace a pamper, or something. When commercials start its an indication I gotta prepare for the other 45 minutes. Guess what? The TV does not know.

Also, with targetted advertising, if you are not interested in the advertisement it makes sense to allow the user to skip the goddamn thing!. She would not have bought your product anyway. Giving the user a penalty for not being interested will only work if such process is not transparent because otherwise it will piss people off because its not friendly to the user for in traditional advertising a user is able to ignore an advertisement when not interested which does not give either the user, nor the advertiser, not the provider for advertisement infrastructure negative implications.

Instead, the provider for advertisement should do its best to bring relevant advertisements to keep user interested and advertiser rise product sale or brand recognition. IOW, if the targetted advertising works well a penalty is not required. So what this indicates is that the targetted advertising model is not good enough. Yeah, that will motivate me as advertiser to invest in this platform. No way, I'd go to one which does work, like Google. Besides that, assuming its optional, it is poor people who would want such advertisement feature to get a cut on the device, and while they do spend money they're not big spenders. So we'll see either commercials for brand recognition or commonly required articles such as *gasp* soap for the dishes, or pampers... :D

horrible..

I think their plan is to give away a free "iphone lite" device with this in the future.... with this in there the ads would pay for it and iphones would probably get in lots of more hands and their evil empire can go on..
