Still using mine (x2)
One is just used as a screen for my energy/environment monitors, but the other gets used daily for all sorts: weechat bitflu (bittorrent) moc (music on console) either from local files or via mpd streamed from a Raspberry pi I still use it for fb chat via Pidgin, but I have to do that via ssh x now, as it's not functional directly on the tablet Still read the news on it as well sometimes. It's also got a 128gb microsd in it, so it's handy as a portable storage device. |

It makes a nice portable audio player. I don't care for headphones, and the N800 can be propped up on its kickstand playing me some background music around the house or yard.

When I want to chat via facebook I login to the Pi using ssh -X and then view pidgin on the tablet. http://www.vanemery.com/Linux/XoverSSH/X-over-SSH2.html |

Me
-I love mucking about with all the diff. wm's and alt os's... -use it for car maps via bluetooth from my n900 ... -love it for reading my books...screen real estate is perfect for reading.. -and yeah tossing in a few monster sized sd cards means a TON of books , film (which it is great for movies) and all my music... -heroes 2 ...along with other games...is nice for the screen size. -in all it is great to play with...learn on...muck about with... whereas it feels a bit more serious when I pick up my n900's I'm sure there is more I'm forgetting... in which case I'll post it here.. ooohhh actually there is something I'm working on and when done (hopefully shortly....) I'll post it up. |
Re: Do you still use n8x0 in 2016 ? How ?
I use it because of its SIP client even though the call quality is not as good as others. As a photo frame also. DialCentral is still working fine and its LED notification is reliable. Until recently I was using it to control an old nokia phone through gnokii to send and receive texts.I am thinking on carefully soldering a ribbon to the leads in the battery compartment so it can be used to control other devices through serial but then I am not sure how to get a connector out in a way that is not too cumbersome. I am still hoping that the firmware for the different components that are proprietary will be released one of these days to the community so the life of the device can be extended indefinitely.

My N800 is just my bedside alarm clock now. I don't know what I'd do with it otherwise, since I have no programming skills.

I use the terminal daily with lynx with ssl as text browser and mosh to administrate my server.
I ported some text tools for that: zsh with grml configs, mosh, jed as editor, elinks, w3m, mutt, hnb, feh, wcalc, sc, slsc, slsh, gcmc, vfu as filemanager. New versions of openvpn, tor, libressl I managed to get the arduino toolchain running, including avrdude to flash arduinos via usb. It's my mpd client, ebook reader with fbreader. mupdf as pdf alternative... I love the n810 because of it's keyboard! |

I will not be writing about my usage of Nx0 series. As it happens almost every linux box and device can be modified freely, so even for 10 years old unit there is still a ton of possibilities with proper knowledge.
When android/ms phone reaches a year of it's existence it is dead if the screen wasn't broken first of course:) My brother killed some kind of Huawei device few days ago. He got it only for few weeks. Drop on the floor and sudden death. Now he is forced to work with my not used n9 and he seems to be more and more interested with it. My blood :D |
