PIM Opinions? Do we need a new suite?
 

I've had my 770 for two weeks now, and whilst it's certainly going well on the web browsing/streaming fronts, and while the 770 isn't supposed to be a PDA I think that 770 PIM is a lot better than the alternative of carrying my PDA around everywhere as well.

I've tried GPE and Winzig, and neither really do what I want, so, in the natural programmer vein, I feel like starting a new Maemo-specific one. However, I want to ask everyone what they think about the current apps before going and starting yet another PIM suite.

After starting development on the MPD client I have found that writing Python apps for the 770 is laughingly easy, and while they do need the extra package to be installed they seem to run at very acceptable speeds.

Basically, what I want to know is:
1) Do you use PIM? At all?
2) If so, which ones do you use? GPE, Winzig, another device even?
3) What features would you like most?

Obviously things like alarms aren't possible yet, although I'm hoping that the work going on with that area will pull through. But what about things like summary screens/today screens, integration between notes and calendars, and so on?

I agree that the mentioned PIM suites does not feel really comfortable. However check this out, thinks this is the way to go...

J-Pilot looks pretty good to me. It also has good import function, through the palm desktop database formats.
Winzip is ok, but importing data isn't easy.

what i have seen ichoose jpilot. But all PIM program have one thing missing:

alarms (by sound), even when the nokia is informatie standby mode

Hopefullly the next version of OS will support the PIM programs with this feature.

Ah, I didn't know about the JPilot port, I'll take a look at that. Hopefully it will fit in a bit better with the GUI soon, though.

Personnally I still carry my Zaurus for PIM duties, for two reasons : first, the keyboard makes it easier and quicker to take down meetings etc. on the fly ; and of course it has Ko/pi (korganiser, platform-independent) and the rest of the kdepim/pi suite (address book, mail client, password safe etc.).
Ko/pi really shines as a mobile agenda/todo. It probably has more interface options and features than most of the commercial offerings on the various PDA platforms out there.
If you were to start on a maemo-specific solution I would say that porting ko/pi would be the sensible thing to do (rather than starting from scratch etc.). Unfortunately, as the initial "K" shows, the suite has evolved from a KDE-specific project and is probably tightly bound to (at least) Qt and some KDE libs, so porting it to a Gtk-based environment like Maemo is probably not trivial at all, sadly.

I agree that Ko/pi would be difficult to port, switching toolsets isn't a job I'd particularly like to do..

The o-hand suite looks promising, and the use of the Evolution formats is even more interesting, and should be good to keep an eye on, although it seems only one application has been released.

None of these seem to really be what I need at the moment, though, although I'm beginning to think I'd be better off going for a more specialised approach, like Due Yesterday (http://www.palmgear.com/index.cfm?fu...e&prodid=8816).

JPilot, is what I recommend. quick, doesn't require much and runs light.

My phone "does" my PIM needs (Sony Ericsson P910i), but I wouldn't mind PIMming with my 770, were it not that without an alarm function, I consider it pretty useless in that field.
