Why not Sailfish os?

Why does Sailfish don't fit on this List?

Re: Why not Sailfish os?

Maybe the amount of closed components. Not all components are open to build Sailfish. Android has AOSP, the Google free version. Sailfish representation on that list would mean something like Mer/Nemo. I'm aware of the merger but for simplicity sake I've put it that way. Silica isn't, last time I checked, open source for example.

KaiOS isn't FOSS either. Even less so than SFOS.

Re: Why not Sailfish os?

It's based off B2G, so that would be open. I don't know if it is the same story as AOSP/Android where the core is open but apps are closed. With sailfish, the issue is more the UI layer being closed.

Re: Why not Sailfish os?

If the OS comes bundled with pre-installed aps that spy on you and that you can't remove, i wouldn't call it FOSS even if the B2G core is. You may want to give GerdaOS a try though: https://gerda.tech/

Well, as far as I see SFOS does not belong on the list because all of those are vaporware except for Lineage, and that's android.

Happy to clear it up for you :)

I find it curious that a web site that boasts "6 Open Source [emphasis mine] Android Alternative Operating Systems For Mobiles" greets me with a notifications popup:

Re: Why not Sailfish os?

Its their polite way of saying ..."can we follow you around wherever you go?"

I have no doubt that fossbytes as well as Facebook, twitter, google and pintrest are all doing that anyway ...just to make sure if you "forgot" to hit the "allow" button to show notifications...
(note their tentacled "share" buttons that have leverage onto the fossbytes page near the bottom)

As I said elsewhere...
the moment anyone hits a page with such "sharing" sponsors...
all of said sponsors take note of your arrival ...tag you and track you ... your interests..and where you may go from there...
.regardless of the fact that you may not even have a facebook, google+ , twitter, pinterest profile...

the tentacles are everywhere.

it is like a freakin' cancer of the interwebbian lymph nodes...
trying to eradicate it or avoid it is virtually an impossibility...

A self replicating all-devouring tracking virus burning through the web...
that likewise couldn't be expunged...
wouldn't be a bad thing.

Vaporware ?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KaiOS

Having glimpsed this actually existent phone,
I did not realize it had an "open-source" background.

For the price and fun of can-opening it,
perhaps it might be fun
to see if it as welded-shut internally as I expect it to be.

The Dictatorians would not usually permit such
to be sold over-the-counter if it could be
deGoggled
deTwatted
deFakebooked.

from https://www.reddit.com/r/linux/comme...m_medium=web2x

"Founder here. Thanks for spreading the word!

To clarify things a bit: yep, the goal for stable release is to remove all proprietary/tracking parts from KaiOS itself, meanwhile Google Apps and Gameloft games already are removed..."

To be sure,
a disemboweled KaiOS device may only be useful as a wifi tether,
but it would be cheap and pocketable
and if the battery specs are correct, even cheaper in use.
