I am thinking at putting an entire Eli Stone episode as starting video.. so it'll deter thief from using my device...

:D ;)

I'm all for letting the public dictate it, but I can start saying Maemo.org. But The .Org is SO cool, I wish I'd thought of it first. Why does it bother you guys? You're rock stars in the cellphone world now! With legend comes nicknames and fandom. Its not so bad... is it?
Well, in my opinion ".org" is very generic, many OS projects have .org domains, so it doesn't fit well... also, i really do think it sounds awful IMHO :) so i'm hoping it won't catch on.

PS: thank you for your compliment, but it doesn't apply to me. i haven't contributed anything yet. just to make that clear :)

You just did contribute, and I'm happy for the feedback. I'll stop saying the .Org, and let the guys know the devs and old heads don't like it.

Hellow :)

The video http://castus.dnsalias.com:8080/shar...id_lame_r3.avi is very good :) Thanks a lot for all :)

Can you just add this logo on the video ? :

http://www.gnu.org/graphics/heckert_gnu.png

(in same size of others logo in the end part of the video)

It would be very fair and kind :) Thanks :)

I've just seen the youtube vid but I'm unsure how to get to the following location?

1- Copy the video to /usr/share/hildon-welcome/media

Once there I'm sure I can complete the welcome mod

Your help is greatly appreciated

You can only reach this location via a terminal/ssh session and you'll need root permissions in order to copy things to there.

This is not recommend if you don't have some Linux knowledge :(.

Re: N900 alternative boot video (maemo.org one)

Could anyone make a quick step-by-step video for installing the start up and panoramic desk top back ground. If nothing else it would give you a reason to play with your device ( like you really need one).

plz :-)

Thanks for the videos they are quite cool.
However, I think the "shiny" effect is not necessary.

Flyby is looking great, however I wonder if you would have a version of if without any logos in bottom, I personally would like a cleaner look. :)

Hi! I am a rookie in this community and I'm not a linux expert.
However I am glad to give you my help.

Step By step boot video change for N900:

1- go to the repository menu of N900
2- Install ssh server on N900
3- ssh on installation will ask you for a password (choose one)
4- go to your main PC and download a free ssh client with a graphic interface (it's much easier to use for a newbie) like winscp.
5- in your N900 launch xterminal and type: sudo gainroot
6- in x terminal type then: ifconfig
7- ifconfig will show you r ip address (of course you MUST be connected to a wireless lan with your N900 :) )
8- open winscp and login to this ip address.
login:root password: your passord
9- go tho /usr/share/hildon-welcom/media and copy the boot video you want.
10- ho to /etc/hildon-welcom.d/ and copy default.conf to ypur PC
11-open in your PC default.conf with notepad and modify it with the name of the new video
12- save without changing name of the file
13- replace the file .conf in N900
14- disconnect and restart N900.

That's it...

I hope to have been useful

Isn't it a bit complicated? The video can be downloaded straight to the device (right?) or just transferred from pc the usual way. The n900 itself has a terminal. There's no need to ssh into it if you have it in your hand
EDIT: it occurred to me you might not be able to edit text files on the n900 without installing a text editor. Does maemo 5 have a text editor included?

Re: N900 alternative boot video (maemo.org one)

He said he wasn't an expert. But it was still useful. I got to use the terminal AND SSH all in one deal. Good learning for a newbie

Re: N900 alternative boot video (maemo.org one)

So does this ssh open up something that couldn't be done in the terminal ( if you know how to use that).

Really, I'm just asking, I don't know.

I have a problem, now I don't view anything when boot the phone, I have the default config and I check this many times:
/usr/share/hildon-welcome/media/Hands-v32-h264.avi (I have transfer the video to my PC and it works correctly)

The default.conf are in:
/etc/hildon-welcome.d/default.conf

with exactly this: (2 lines, no spaces)
[hildon-welcome]
Hands-v32-h264.avi

Someone know what happen?, thanks.

Re: N900 alternative boot video (maemo.org one)

Somebody (capable) should create an application for this.. I imagine it would take very less time to create, and would be a big pleasure for every noob: just browse the repositories, install the app, locate the vid, and apply. :)

Kino default.conf file should be like this.

[hildon-welcome]
filename=Hands-v32-h264.avi

(or your new avi name)

LOL, I forgot to put "filename=" before, hehehe, I lost 2 hours of my time trying things and at the end I had to reinstall the firmware to solve it. :o

Well, at least now I can change the video without problems. :D

Thank you hcancelik.

I'll hop on in in this thread to post a boot-up video i made during the night, i just made it into an .avi don't know if there's something special that's needed but here it is:)

Hope you don't mind.

Please speak your mind about it:)

Youtube link:

I tried running your video and it chunked hardcore. Perhaps it has to do with the encoding? From within the OS it chunks the same in mplayer and mediaplayer.

Very cool video, and very impressed. Making it an app would be really cool and have it as a playlist, so we dont know what boot screen we're going to get.

Even though i hardly turn my phone off.
