[QUESTION]Telegram for Meego/Harmattan?
Hi everyone, I'm looking for a way to use the awesome Telegram onto my Nokia N9, is there any?

Re: [QUESTION]Telegram for Meego/Harmattan?
you can use webogram at https://web.telegram.org/
there's also tg, but i haven't tested it on harmattan, you can try if you want |
Re: [QUESTION]Telegram for Meego/Harmattan?
I was wondering if anyone would be interested in developing it. I am trying to learn and step into the world of app-developing but it's been a slow process so far :)
I would be more than happy to donate if anyone's willing to take up the project. https://core.telegram.org/api |
Re: [QUESTION]Telegram for Meego/Harmattan?
I don't know a single person that uses Telegram.
I can't do something I can't test. |

Unique key is number of cellphone for SMS like what's app. Use only native clients for windows and Linux (both awesome) at my computers, at other people computers and on my N9 Web-version, but Webogram is not awesome. |

https://openrepos.net/content/dax/sailorgram someone that cans write programs for Meego? |
Re: [QUESTION]Telegram for Meego/Harmattan?
I didn't want to announce anything before the first working version, but I've already started working on an N9 Telegram client, which I'll also release as free software (most probably GPLv3).
Current status: I've successfully integrated the tgl telegram library into my own application; and I'm able to register & log in and received contact list using Qt. I'm going to start working on the UI. However, I cannot announce any release date currently. I work on it in my free time, so the progress is not fast. It might take a month (or even more) to release the initial version with minimal features. Other features will be added gradually. |

With Skype being proprietary, Facebook being Facebook, and WhatsApp also being Facebook. It feels like Telegram is the wisest direction to move when it comes to Internet messenger, even if it's not so popular yet. |
Re: [QUESTION]Telegram for Meego/Harmattan?
To be honest, IMHO, the ideal would be an open, federated platform based on XMPP(or SIP) which supports sending text, voice/video call and also sending files. AFAIK, text/voice/video is already supported but I didn't find any client/server supporting sending images/audio and other files. (I found a draft for supporting such scenarios based on WebDAV, but apparently it is too new).
If that is supported properly, and the service is provided by at least a single server, I would jump on it and will try to encourage others to do so. XMPP is very close, but such an open platform is probably not commercially interesting for anybody to invest in. I wonder what would happen if EMail was going to be invented these days! Your emails were probably limited to a single provider. |

I'm not entirely comfortable with Telegram not released the server code yet but oh well. But built on XMPP it would make sure that no one nicked the standard and shut down the servers because money. |

Great news! Tell us if you need any support or someone to test it :)

Re: [QUESTION]Telegram for Meego/Harmattan?
I am most definitely donating the moment you release a working Telegram client for my beloved N9.

Re: [QUESTION]Telegram for Meego/Harmattan?
Is there any way to use Pidgin/libpurple/libpurple plugins on the N9? There's a lot of those plugins we could use. telegram-purple as an example. purple-facebook is also good.
|
Re: [QUESTION]Telegram for Meego/Harmattan?
IIRC, a purple plugin pack was provided for N9 which was nicely integrated into its accounts system. Therefore, it should be possible to provide other plugins too. But I think that would need some integration work too.

"Source: Company statement"
Here you will never see any XMPP-User. Please, stop promoting all the proprietary stuff and start using clean XMPP. There are a lot of free available servers. If you don't trust them, just install your own. My account is running on my own Raspberry Pi which is located in the most trustful space: my home ;) There are good apps for any platform: Linux, Windows, Android, Meego, Sailfish. Most of them can also use OTR for end-2-end encryption. All the XMPP-servers communicate with each other via TLS and forward secrecy. Which of the commercial systems can provide such functionality? Sailfish is using Telepathy-Gabble which support OTR, Streams-Transfer and a lot more of XMPP-features. Just torture them with questions until they provide all of the features in the GUI! XMPP is very flexible. Its very easy to use it as bot for e.g. automations. You have stable libraries for C++/Java/Perl/Python/... So tell me, why using something like Whatsapp??? |
Re: [QUESTION]Telegram for Meego/Harmattan?
I've already written about it. XMPP is great, but for many users it doesn't provide the same features that such proprietary services provide. Mainly, it has poor 'offline messaging' support. I've experienced many 'lost messages' with XMPP (well, it is/was mainly an 'instant messaging' protocol). It doesn't support 'offline' file transfers, which effectively removes support for audio/video/image messages which can be sent when the other user is not online.
No, current XMPP is NOT a replacement for messaging protocols/applications. |
Re: [QUESTION]Telegram for Meego/Harmattan?
Offline message is just a question of server configuration. My prosody server collects and deliver everything if the user is online again.
File transfer is using end-to-end, so yes, its not possible to save MBs of stuff on the server - from my point of view its ok. Conversations has an plugin for storing files on web servers and offer the download hyperlink via XMPP. This allows users to download stuff later or to share it in XMPP-MUCs (Chatrooms). There are a lot of possibilities. The commercial systems do not make something special, they just do it in one place - which lets the user lost completely his privacy. |
Re: [QUESTION]Telegram for Meego/Harmattan?
Possibilities is not enough. We need: 1. an integrated, streamlined implementation 2. Service providers for it
|
Re: [QUESTION]Telegram for Meego/Harmattan?
hedayat, you have never tried Conversations on Android, right?
Open Source, full featured, active development and a lot of features. Service providers? Just choose one: https://xmpp.net/directory.php https://www.jabberes.org/servers/ Own server? No problem: https://prosody.im/ https://www.ejabberd.im/ What do you want more? I use XMPP since 2001. All my contacts now use it to. |
Re: [QUESTION]Telegram for Meego/Harmattan?
Nope, I don't have an android phone. Does Conversation use the providers you mentioned for uploading files? If you can seemlessly send files using Conversation and they appear inline like text messages, then yes, this is what I'm looking for. I've tried Jitsi, it doesn't support server based file transfers, and I've experienced "lost messages" with their own service (jit.si). I've also experiences lost messages with google talk (when it supported xmpp).
|
Re: [QUESTION]Telegram for Meego/Harmattan?
Yes, Conversations is this what you are looking for. File transfer (using Jingle), encryption, audio messages - just end user friendly.
http://conversations.im/ This is the current benchmark for all mobile IM apps. |
Re: [QUESTION]Telegram for Meego/Harmattan?
It indeed looks promising. Do you know any public servers which support HttpUploadComponent? (As I understood, Conversations uses peer-to-peer file transfer for transferring image messages, however using that component makes it possible to send images to the server. I'm NOT interested in Jingle file transfer since it is peer-to-peer).

Re: [QUESTION]Telegram for Meego/Harmattan?
I tried the web client for skype the other day and found that it didn't support file transfer. But that also made me realise that sure it's nice to have built in file transfer but nothing I find absolutely necessary. I could as well upload the file to a cloud service like dropbox or something. Shouldn't be that hard for the client to send the file to the cloud service and the link to the other person.

Re: [QUESTION]Telegram for Meego/Harmattan?
any news about the Telegram project?
|
Re: [QUESTION]Telegram for Meego/Harmattan?
Which one? If you are talking about mine, you should wait a little longer. Maybe in one month there will be a minimally usable version out there.

Slow, but not stalled!
It was resumed just recently, then I go traveling for a few days. I'm going to continue from today/tomorrow. |
Re: [QUESTION]Telegram for Meego/Harmattan?
any update? there's still someone interested :)
|
Re: [QUESTION]Telegram for Meego/Harmattan?
Well, unfortunately, not something worth announcing. There has been some improvement to the backend, but UI still needs work. registration is OK, and I'm working on the contact list & messages view.
If someone is willing to help, I might be able to create a public repo sooner and accept contributions. |
