Pebble Bluetooth Watch App for N900 or N9?

There is a kickstarter project to make a wrist watch called the Pebble which serves as a secondary screen and input device for a mobile phone or other device. The display is eink so it is low power but also low speed refresh, no idea bout real battery life. I think production is still about a year away but they already have $10M in kickstarter advanced purchases. The kickstarter page also shows it being used as a cycle computer (speedometer/odometer) while the phone presumably is safely buried in a pannier or handlebar bag.
Is anyone considering developing apps to use this device with the N900/N9 or will most people wait for the next great FOSS Linux handheld after the Nokia devices are obsolete. There was work on the first and 1.5 generation devices from Sony Ericson such as the LiveView using existing Maemo apps like OpenWatch.

Pebble can receive simple alerts and notifications from if this then that (ifttt.com) or our web-facing RESTful endpoint. More adventurous developers can use the Pebble SDK, with its Arduino-like abstractions and simple C structure, to gain full control of the watch. Multiple apps can run on Pebble, along side watchfaces and regular notifications.

Load apps using Bluetooth
144 x 168 pixel display black and white e-paper
Bluetooth 2.1+ EDR and 4.0 (Low Energy)
4 buttons
Vibrating motor
3 axis accelerometer with gesture detection
Distribute apps via Pebble watchapp store

I love to see N9 communicating with pebble watch. But, I see pebble SDK isn't available yet.

When it will be available than we should talk, now it's just not there yet.

The display is not eInk. It is the same display as the MetaWatch.

Pebble can change instantly, thanks to its brilliant, outdoor-readable electronic-paper (e-paper) display.

I think e-ink is nearlythe same tech as e-paper, but it is not an LCD.

Re: Pebble Bluetooth Watch App for N900 or N9?

Pebble is _exactly_ an LCD (source). Calling it e-Paper is ... a morally-questionable marketing strategy.

i Agree Especially Since It Is Refreshed Regularly unlike an eink Display and uses a backlight, does it? Or only at Nite. Why Is Swype Capatalizing Every Word! Lol.

So, what Color Pebble Should I Get?
Is Anyone On this Forum In Line To get the sdk or API Specs So An App Can Be developed For The N9, that Pushes Texts, calls and Email Notifications?

bump...

reading up on the matter, the display is actually fine (4uA power usage and only needs a minimal 4Hz refresh signal, not constant data updates) and the watch will run for 7 days...

Too bad the n900 with bluetooth on won't last that long :)

Re: Pebble Bluetooth Watch App for N900 or N9?

metawatch ~5 days, pebble ~7 days...

These are way too short charge periods for a watch, imho.

I have a watch-format HRM that goes on for YEARS with the same button of a battery, granted if it was connected to the belt all the time it propably would drain the battery faster... but still...

I would love to get either one but the runtime between chargings should be at least several weeks.

Waiting for my Pebble. You can count on me for dev/testing purposes.

Looks interesting - but it would be much more so, if they would open source the firmware. Otherwise, no joy, no buy...

Re: Pebble Bluetooth Watch App for N900 or N9?

Just did some quick testing. The python library, libpebble, seems to work fine on N900 after some minor changes for py25 compatibility, with or without using lightblue, but only when I put the watch in discoverable mode (i.e. by opening the Settings -> Bluetooth screen).

If the watch is in any other screen, I can't even establish a rfcomm connection:
Code:

$ rfcomm connect 0 <mac address> 1
Can't connect RFCOMM socket: Connection refused

This problem doesn't exist when pairing the watch with my laptop running Gentoo linux. Perhaps it is due to some bug in N900 bluetooth stack?

Works only in discoverable mode:
Works in any mode:
  • Gentoo + net-wireless/bluez-4.101-r5

Re: Pebble Bluetooth Watch App for N900 or N9?

Has anybody gotten any further with connecting the Pebble to the N900? I am stuck using my Nexus phone just because I love the Pebble! I'd rather use my N900...

Re: Pebble Bluetooth Watch App for N900 or N9?

j-kidd : could you please share your code? Aka, how to make libpebble work with python2.5? And, similarly edit libpebble2 ? Maybe, libpebble2 will connect better (no idea, Bluetooth is finicky).

P.S. I am not a fan of python, but better working python app than no app.

Thank you. Best regards.

Re: Pebble Bluetooth Watch App for N900 or N9?

Does anyone have an updated thoughts on using the Pebble with the N900 so late in the game?
I can't find the app Rockwatch available anymore and I don't remember if it worked on the N900 with the N9 app compatibility program, which I do not recall the name of either.
I suppose I could set the Pebble up with a borrowed Android phone but that would loose much of the function of the smartwatch.
Anyways I finally have my Pebble coming and am still using a N900 now that the party is ending despite starting this thread.

Super stoked, I have been waiting since before the first kickstarter opened!
Any advice on particularly useful pebble apps and where to grab a good collection of the free ones before the repos go away?

No idea, I haven't used any on mine lol. I thought I would use it for heaps, but end up just using it as a watch and music control for my phone. I work outdoors, so it's nice to be able to pause/play when someone comes up to me to ask me something.

Re: Pebble Bluetooth Watch App for N900 or N9?

Back in the late 2000s I spec'ed out a dream system when I was cycling 40km/day to work and studies.
I was using a sharp Zaurus and a Motorola Razr flip phone at the time and listened to podcasts or music from the Z and had a DIY headphone switchover box for a BT headset for phone calls.
The dream was a watch to control stuff and read SMS, a BT headset with 3.5mm phone for good earphones, and a super cool phone/PDA in my pack or pannier bag. I also implemented a dynamo generator charging system for my N900 and other USB charge stuff on the bicycle as part of that system. The only thing missing was the watch.
A few years late but I will soon be living that dream.

Maybe I should have dreamed for (way)more money than I make and reliable future stream of even better GNU FOSS Linux computer phones. Also a cool car, a motorcycle, a house, a cool airplane, upgrade my lapsed pilot license, and more money for fuel and maintenance. Why not a helicopter and license too since I am going nuts!
But yea, I cant wait to integrate this watch into my system.
