This is a unique opportunity to own a never released technology with a never released prototype!!!

Any chance you can find one of the Vertu-Nokia Maemo prototypes with the Titanium frame and sapphire digitizer? How cool to have the best mobile OS and a nearly indestructible phone too.

Hi! Thank you for the message. Unfortunately, I haven't seen any in "flesh". However, I have been in the hunting for a Nokia Lauta and a N87 final version 12MP Xenon flash, which I haven't seen in "flesh" either...

In terms of innovation though, the Nokia McLaren has something never seen and never released before... At least instead of the Lauta we still had the N9 and the N950 and instead of the N87 we had similar the N86 and the touch N8 in terms of camera... And we have seen the best of Maemo with the N900 at least... 3D digitizers and Pre-Touch technology exist nowhere else...

So what does a "3D digitizer" mean?

That video does not explain anything. I watched it twice and all I saw was what looked like a normal, bog-standard touch screen. It required a second video to finally understand.

In short, it is a marketing con. There is nothing "3D" about it. All there is is a normal, bog-standard touch screen that works from a slightly larger distance. That's it.

Six of one and half a dozen of the other.

technically ...a regular old digitizer utilizes working on the surface of the device ...to interact with it...
hence it works within the parameters of what everyone is familiar with...
2 dimensions...

Sooooo...
ergo...
wouldn't a 3 dimensional digitizer be a fish tank???
(actually ...it would be a permeable... floating...and stable block of water...but fish tank will do in a pinch...)

yeah ..
I call "fishy" too
:D

3D work is doable within a VR construct...
but not within the structure of our everyday reality ...with smartphone in hand...

OK, by checking the second video posted by @pichlo I now understand what's meant here.
I still don't get the 3D hype, it's basically just very sensitive capasitive touchscreen. (and from the video it seems too sensitive indeed as the finger movement registers haphazardly...)

Only thing worthy in it might be easier use with mittens on.
