[Browser rant] Just freakin' SCROLLLL!!

Arrrgh, the OEM browser is really starting to get to me. Takes a long time to load pages (Adblock is disabled, Flashblock enabled, "fit width to view" turned off), then when you think the page has fully loaded (nothing more on the progress bar, wait up to 30 seconds) and you go to move the page.. MORE loading.

And then you try and scroll...OMG! Every time i try and scroll makes me want to go and join Steve's fanboys:mad:.

Scroll, read, try to scroll, highlight, tap, try to scroll, highlight, tap tap, try to scroll, highlight, tap tap tap tap tap, scroll, read, try to scroll, highlight, tap, try to scroll, highlight, tap tap, try to scroll, highlight, tap tap tap tap tap, Use the slider bar, wheeeeee 1/2 way down the page in .05 seconds.

And god forbid you touch a flash frame or anywhere near a link frame while trying desperately to scroll, then you either have to wait for the page to load all the flash you didn't actually want, or jump to another page you didn't ask for.

So where do i stand? Are there 'tweaks' for the browser to make my life less miserable? Or has Fennec been improved since the last time i tried it? Will Opera's new touch browser be ported for Maemo (:rolleyes:)?

Uninstall flashblock and adblock. Just disable it isn't suffice.

Re: [Browser rant] Just freakin' SCROLLLL!!

i haven't done any real tweaking of the default browser, I still have adbllock and flash. I don't find it as bad as described. but it still is slow.

Tear on the otherhand...wow it is way faster, responsive, scrolling is quick. handles pretty much everything I've tried with it.
if you haven't already...check it out, you'll be happier.

Re: [Browser rant] Just freakin' SCROLLLL!!

how on earth do you try to scroll?! why would you be even able to accidentally select/click/... while dragging the scrollbar?

Re: [Browser rant] Just freakin' SCROLLLL!!

I scroll with the down button, held down not tapped, and the space bar / shift space bar?

yeah adblock and flashblock make the browser very slow and unusable.

Uninstall them and you will see a significant improvement.

^^ those suggestions. Or Fennec, once its ready. Its probably still too slow for now.

Re: [Browser rant] Just freakin' SCROLLLL!!

What you want. what you really want is this grasemonkey script
inline_blocker . it blockes all code that is run ofter onScroll. most of this code is just horrid java script to inform your masters you have fliped a page. also you can prevent onExit code from running. there is no reason you want java script to run when you leave a page.
java script timeouts can set in about:config
a search will show you how to change the d-pad behavior form scroll to page down
do i see a wiki page with browser tweeks evolving

Stevies gizmo may get by using content served by some providers formatted for his device...

I never expected my tablets 4.1" screen to provide the same user experience as my desktop. I found that most of what I needed from the net when I was away from a man sized computer was being served formatted for mobile devices.

Using those sites and tweaking a UserContent style sheet, I can pull up data using only a 19.2 kbps cell phone connection faster than my desktop with a broadband connection. Much faster than even a 3G iPhone.

Some Examples:

For local news > http://www.6abctogo.com

CSS Tweaks
Code:

@-moz-document url-prefix(http://www.6abctogo.com/) {
    img {display: none !important }
}

Code:

@-moz-document url-prefix(http://www.6abctogo.com/) {
  body {font-size: 150% !important}
}

^Sized just about right and with no ad images. :)

You can find a similar domain for other US cities @ http://www.localwireless.com/wap/

For stock & financial info I use > http://www.marketwatch.com/m/
with the same type of CSS tweaks

OAG > http://mobile.flightstats.com/

Wikipedia > http://wapedia.mobi/

And so on ...

I also forward to a Gmail account and use > https://mail.google.com/mail/x/ to access it. Tweak as required. :)

Oh yea, I almost forgot...

It is possible to add additional search engines to the Internet Search applet if you have root access to your tablet. The configuration files for the search applet are located under /usr/share/mis.

For example, for Google it looks like this:

--------------
<search name="Google"
icon="/usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/hildon/qgn_indi_search_google.png"
action="http://www.google.com/search"
user-input="q">
<input name="btnG" value="Search"/>
<input name="hl" value="en"/>
<input name="safe" value="medium"/>
<input name="client" value="ms-nokia-wifi"/>
</search>
--------------

If you add /m to the "action" line like so
Code:

action="http://www.google.com/m/search"
Your searches will return results formatted for a mobile device if available.

I would have to second qwerty12's suggestion of Tear...using it almost exclusivly now. I cant believe how much faster it is...for me it only has a few minor bugs.

I've installed Tear. Not bad, certainly missing functions that the oem browser has (downloads for instance). But that's OK, just copy and paste the URL into the 'old' browser.

I'm trying out Tear, but I've found that MicroB is at least as fast running the User Agent Switcher and set as an iPhone. It's easy to switch back if need be, and I don't mind iPhone optimized pages at all. Certainly sites like Facebook, Dropbox, Gmail, and a number of my blogs load much faster and are pleasant to read. Also, be sure to remove adblock. I'm glad it's being worked on, but it really seems to slow down my browser.

Switch off Javascript as well and Microb will run!

indeed, wish there was a way to whitelist pages on wanted to have javascript on, and leave it off by default otherwise...

downloads mostly work, as long as the mime code and stuff is correct...

Re: [Browser rant] Just freakin' SCROLLLL!!

I'll tell ya what... what almost had me using Tear exclusively was that bookmark plug-in. (< I think :confused: )

It opens saved addy's in Tear with no need to input a dang thing. Unfortumately I could only get it to launch as a Task navigator bar widget/thingy and my user defined slots are taken by Personal Menu and Command Navigator.

If I could launch it or Tear with a pre defined web page from Persol Menu or Personal Launcher I would be golden. :)
