Jolla successor - Yotaphone

According to Yahoo News - the next Jolla phone will be a YotaPhone.

Do we have any confirmation for this? I read this everywhere.on the web now, but no article gives a source... And if they do, it's this one Yahoo article.

Re: Jolla successor - Yotaphone

Not really a 'Jolla' Phone, but a third-party SailfishOS phone.

I wouldn't expect that this would cause Jolla to abandon plans (if any) to produce a Jolla Phone successor, surely there is room for more than one SailfishOS Phone on the market so people dont have to choose between the OS they want and various hardware features they might like.

Whats even more interesting is the idea that Yota would bet the farm on SailfishOS and drop android completely, that's a massive risk but perhaps they are under pressure from the Russian Government to do so.

Yota not switching to Sailfish OS for future devices after all

AFAIK based on various bits and pieces of information it looks like Jolla actually strongly prefers just working on the software (Sailfish OS) and licensing it to others, rather than selling their own hardware (that they have to design, manufacture and support). The current Jolla phone being a sort of a proof of concept and the Tablet being something similar + free money from Intel for using an Intel CPU in it.

I would myself rather prefer Jolla making their own devices as I'm afraid third part devices might miss some of the unique Jolla features, such as ToH and might give more incentives to Jolla open source stuff so that they have something to license (IIRC this has even been stated a few times by Jolla people).

The last point is IMHO quite short-sighted, as you can still license your trademarks and artworks/themes/etc. while keeping the software itself open source. You can also charge for support, enhancements, certifications, etc. And it is not some crazy unproven idea, there are companies that are doing this rather successfully. ;)

It seems to not be true.

However, that doesn't mean they are working on it.
Or that they the next yPhone won't also be a jPhone.

(Yeah, I said jPhone, come at me bro)

Re: Jolla successor - Yotaphone

According to kommersant.ru next YotaPhone will be built on ZTE factory (planning to sign the contract next month). They will show it in 1st quarter of 2016.

No words about sailfishOS, though.

Little bit off-topic, but e-yes (Nitdroid dev) was working at Yota a while ago, maybe he has someone from within who can share some info.

Way OOT, but I remember Dave999 actually "encourage" people on here to call Jolla phone with that weird name.

Any news about YotaPhone powered by Sailfish?

Re: Jolla successor - Yotaphone

We do not have any ongoing development of Jolla version of YotaPhone. I can’t say how things will turn in the future. May be Sailfish will obtain a certain market share as mobile OS.

At this point of time, we are fully committed to Android and recently migrated our customer base to 5.0 and working on the next generation of Android OS.

(Jolla has reached out to us, and it seems like the company is committed to Android, but we’re still not sure if YotaPhone 3 will ship with Android pre-installed, they’re open for other options as well)

So it seems that we won't see Yota SailfishOS phone. At least not offically?

AFAIK Yota isn't only a hardware manufacturer, but also a mobile broadband provider. The commit you link to seems to be related to the broadband service, not to a new hardware.

Re: Jolla successor - Yotaphone

Well I have heard from my quite reliable sources that Yota3 will be running SFOS. I hinted it already here https://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?...&postcount=289 (tho Yota is not completely Russian, only partly owned by Rostec).

I will pass this as rumour because I have nothing concrete to back up my claim.

Some old news about SFOS and Yota:

Lets see how OMP has managed to get lipstick work on dual screen :)

Edit: http://appleapple.top/became-known-t...e-yotaphone-3/
Maybe we will know soon

Where did you hear sail for yota? Sounds like total fake news. Would be great if it was true and official sail, not this Russian sail.

Love speculation!

You are right. I have completely forgot about the refund. Time to step up and make our voices heard.

Where is the refund? Maybe eeklund's source have some Intel.

Aaaaa forget about refund. Jolla scamed us all. Just get over it. I have given up on jolla...almost. Not yet but soon.

Never heard anything about Yota for a long time here :)

Also SFOS/Lipstick doesn't support multiple displays, so, make further guesses yourself :)

Yeah maybe my sources weren't so reliable after all :)
But what is engadgets source in specs(other than storage size)?

Would have made sense since Rostec is owner of both Yota and SFOS.

Maybe the Chinese version will run android and Russian version that will come later, something else..? Or not :D

I am sorry if my source was wrong and I started not cool rumour..

Yeah that why I was interested about that:D I heard Yota2 worked somehow, but the main display was just mirrored to E-Ink screen.
