[Announce] Bluetooth PBAP and IrMC / Carkit support is coming to N900...

--> Project Summary can now be found on this Wiki Page

Please everyone, feel free to help maintaining and keeping the Project Summary Wiki up-to-date

### General Information ###

--- PBAP ---

The Bluetooth Phone Book Access Profile (PBAP) allows to exchange Phone Book objects between carkits and mobile devices.
Or in other words, PBAB profile gives your car unit read access to your mobile phone book...
(to be exact: to both, the phonebook stored on SIM card and the phone book stored on internal memory. But for N900 only second one is relevant).

Described in a more specific way, whenever a connection between your carkit and your PBAB enabled phone is established, your phone book will be transfered to your carkit automatically.
What happens from now with the transfered phone book of course depends on the features of your carkit.
Usual use cases are browse and dial (voice-dial if supported by carkit) your contacts and show caller names for incoming calls.
With an integrated In-Car Infotainment/Phone/Navigation/Whatever system it is even possible to use the contacts addresses as target for the navigation system.

By default N900 does NOT support PBAP and thus the in-car use cases described above are either not possible or require manual workarounds as the in other threads described "Petrovich workaround" (manual sending of vCards via Bluetooth) or OPP (Object Push Profile - A Bluetooth profile that enables a Bluetooth device to transfer (push) an object (e.g. contact) to another Bluetooth device).

Here comes the good news:
NOW YOU CAN HAVE PBAB ON YOUR N900 !!!

--- IrMC ---

This project also aims to provide IrMC support.
IrMC is another method to transfer the phone book.

### Credits ###

Credits for the achieved so far go to those who contributet in the old thread "Car kit can not access contact information",
especially the developers: drdrewusaf, tuxy, jarmo2, hschmitt, Ossman, mirakels...,
but of course also all the others who helped with testing and troubleshooting!

### Disclaimer ###

!!! CAUTION !!!
This project is still in development stage, which means there are still some risks, downsides and issues to be solved before PBAB on N900 is ready for the average user...(see below).

Please read this summary carefully and evaluate the risks involved for yourself!
(Keep in mind that this can cause problems for the phone. Backup your data, backup your config (apps > system > backup) and know how to reflash)

Whatever you do, you are doing it at your own risk!

However, if you want to have PBAB / IrMC and want to help out here -

You are more than welcome as a tester or even developer.

Of course, before you start playing with your phone, you should check if your carkit does support PBAP / IrMC. If it does not, this solution can not help you - Sorry!
(Note: Carkits older than 2007 probably do NOT support PBAP)

### Current Project Status: ###

--> Project Summary can now be found on this Wiki Page

Please everyone, feel free to help maintaining and keeping the Project Summary Wiki up-to-date

-----------------------------------------------
Please Note: The above is not based on my work! Its mostly a copy+paste summary of the brilliant job of the developers mentioned before to give the community a more convenient way to implement and enjoy PBAB / IrMC ;-) !!!

Re: [Announce] Bluetooth PBAP / Carkit support is coming to N900...

Dont know if pbap causes it...
but last night i ran a apt-get upgrade and everything went fine - but the obexd-installations...
upgrade said that no upgrade at this because of wrong version. not sooo bad.
But yet i wanted to go in the shell to get the older versions of obexd... i wanted: no more shell... no more menues except the screens... and no programm-manager any more... placed a shortcut to term on desktop - but it is not working...
as said above: i dont know IF pbap-workaround causes this... but be careful...

By default N900 does NOT support PBAP and thus in-car use cases like (voice-)dialing from carkit/head unit or display of caller names are not possible.

So this seems to be quite a cool addition, but I'm a bit confused about exactly what it accomplishes.

The built in BlueTooth hands-free unit in my car (2010 Mazda 3 Sport) works perfectly with the N900 already.. it can understand the contact information I transfer to it (it will distinguish between numbers stored in the N900 as 'home', 'work', 'mobile', or 'other'), and provides both numerical voice dialing for random numbers, as well as stored voice id's for any transferred contacts.

Would this allow the car to read information off the phone more dynamically?

At the moment when someone calls, there's a display on my dashboard that shows the incoming number and a voice prompt tells me someone's calling... would PBAP show me the person's name instead, having matched it up with the data in my phonebook?

A bit more information about what features this profile actually enables would be great :)

Sure, simply said PBAB profile gives your car unit read access to your mobile phone book...
(to be exact: to both, the phonebook stored on SIM card and the phone book stored on internal memory. But for N900 only second one is relevant).

And described in a more specific way, whenever a connection between your carkit and your PBAB enabled phone is established, your phone book will be transfered to your carkit automatically.
What happens from now with the transfered phone book of course depends on the features of your carkit.
Usual use cases are browse and dial (voice-dial if supported by carkit) your contacts and yes, it should also show caller names for incoming calls.
With an integrated In-Car Infotainment/Phone/Navigation/Whatever system it is even possible to use the contacts addresses as target for the navigation system.

As you mention that you can already transfer contacts, I assume you are using either the in other threads described "Petrovich workaround" (manual sending of vCards via Bluetooth) or something else like OPP (Object Push Profile). Even though my carkit seems to support OPP, I never used it as I don't know how ;-), but as far as I know it is also a manual way of transferring the contacts manually.

In short: Yes, you are right, PBAB allows the car to read phone book information off the phone more dynamically/automatically :D

Just checked the Mazda Handsfree Website.
And it seems the Mazda 3 supports PBAB phone book import defined as
Quote:

Ability to transfer and store up to 1,000 names and 10,000 phone numbers in the phonebook located in your Navigation system from your cellular phonebook. The phone must support the BlueTooth Sync or PBAP Profile for this feature.
while contact import is defined as
Quote:

Ability to transfer your contacts individually directly from your phone to the Mazda Handsfree system. The phone must support the Bluetooth® OPP Profile for this feature.
I hope this helps to better understand what PBAP is about...

Absolutely! I appreciate the detailed reply.

This is definitely exciting -- I can't wait to experiment when I get a bit of time to sit in the car and phone everyone I know :p

Is there any way to get rid of the fake update notice?

Also, I tried the steps for uninstall it and both of them failed... What am I doing wrong...

Thanks,

Thanks for the installation instruction. Unfortunately I wasn't able to see the phonebook on my Audi RNS-510 (also used in Volkswagen, SEAT and Skoda). I have attached two log files, hope you find both helpfull.

Tried to take a look at your logs, but get an error "The capture file appears to have been cut short in the middle of a packet." while opening with Wireshark.
And Wireshark shows obviously only the first few packets of the connection.
Guess your connection was either disconnected or something went wrong with the dump!?
Maybe you can describe a bit more specific what you did?
Not sure if I can really help, but if one of the developers investigates your issue every information is useful to understand what the situation is...

I got the same message but I thought I might be normal. I'll create a new log tomorrow, hope that one will be better.

As for what I did... I just started my car, my N900 connected to the RNS-510 system and after about five minutes I reached my destination so I stopped the logging.

Cool! I have an aftermarket Kenwood "KCA-BT200" that claims to support PBAP. But unfortunately I just sent my N900 off for repairs. Replying to the thread so I can subscribe. I'll test when I get my unit back.

Yes, you can remove the package mp-fremantle-205-pr to get rid of the update notice.
For myself I opted not to remove so far as this might cause trouble with future maemo updates, but others removed it...
See this Post for more information from drdrewusaf.

Please try it this way (Sorry forgot to include this in the summary. Please let me know if it works, so I can update the summary):

1) Download these 2 .deb packages:
libopenobex1 1.4
obexd 0.18

2) Place them in a folder on the N900, say /home/user/mypackages

3) As root run (replace /home/user/mypackages with the path to the folder where you placed the files):

Code:

apt-get remove openobex-apps
cd /home/user/mypackages
dpkg -i *.deb

4) Reboot the phone.

Hey it works now !

BMW X5 E70 (2007 model), built in car kit. Everything works perfectly: both transferring phone book to the carkit and name recognizing when incoming call received.

Thanks guys. I promised to pay $50 for those who can get it done. I'll be happy to do that. Just need payment details.

Hm, this looks quite strange to me...
Tried to open your new dump, but get the same error again with Wireshark showing only the few first packets.
Looks like establishing the BT connection failed already - is your phone paired with your car at all?
Unfortunately I have no idea what the cause for this situation could be :(
Especially without knowing the exact steps you have taken and possible errors you ran into!?
Maybe if one of the developers will look at your dump he can figure out what might be the cause for this...

Strange. The phone got paired, the icon changed on my phone and I was able to access the phone menu on my RNS-510 system.

What steps do I need to describe better? I start the logging just before I started my car, the phone got paired, drove for about 40 minutes, parked my car, the phone got unpaired, entered the building and stopped logging by pressing Ctrl+C.

Hello guys!
What about external bluetooth car kits - e.g. Parrot?
Is this script work with them?

Thanks.
Regards.

In general, yes, any device supporting PBAB should work (no matter if build-in or external or whatever).

BUT, in the old thread ( Car kit can not access contact information...) users reported that Parrot does not support PBAB but uses IrMC Sync.
However, you might want to check the old thread. Someone reported a solution for IrMC there...

Re: [Announce] Bluetooth PBAP / Carkit support is coming to N900...

I tested it yesterday and for the first time I could see the "Contact list" option on my car, however when I click on the option nothing happens, the contact list does not appear. Also, I noticed the BT connection becomes very unstable (dropping from time to time).

Anyway, I could uninstall it and the connection got stable again but as expected the "Contact list" option dissapeared...

I just hope Nokia implement PBAP on a next update...

Thanks,
Andre.

Please note that the phone book transfer might take some moments to complete and appear (guess up to around 1 minute).
Furthermore, with previous versions it was in some cases necessary to place an outgoing call once to initiate the transfer...
Not sure if it was really the call or just the additional time that did the trick and assumed it is not necessary anymore with the latest version - but its still worth a try and place an outgoing call after the connection was established...

Just to be sure I reinstalled the original obex packages and used the manual from the first post to install the packages again.

Even now I don't end up with a correct hcidump file. But this time the file shows a few errors. However I didn't see any errors on my N900 or RNS-510 system.

To analyse failures I think it is very vsaluable to also get syslog output. Thsi can show what obexd is doing. It shows things you won't see in the hcidump log.

To use syslog:

apt-get install sysklogd

and add the --debug optuon to your obexd command invocation.

sysklogd will create a file /var/log/syslog

After your test copy this file to some other location (do not delete the original)
and edit out the relevant part. so you can post it alongside the hcidump log.

Hi Mirakels!

Thankx a lot for your support!
Would it be possible to give us a more detailed guideline how to enable the --debug option, one that even Linux-noobs will understand :D
I think it would be nice to have this in the summary in the first post...

mirakels 2010-07-27 20:16

Re: [Announce] Bluetooth PBAP / Carkit support is coming to N900...

The startup command should become something like

/usr/lib/obex/obexd --debug --opp --ftp --pcsuite --pbap --symlinks --root .obex-root --root-setup /usr/bin/obex-root-setup --capability !/usr/bin/gen-obex-capability.sh

Ypu can run this manually after killing the current running one, or
you can change the dbus service file (somewhere in /usr/share/dbus/service I think) so it will be started like this on startup,

Not this is only usefull if you install the sysklog package.

hmm, doesnt seem to work for me. everything gets installed ok but after reboot device seems a bit slower. specially the X part. switching between desktops hangs sometimes. and when i check obexd running then i see only --ftp --opp and --pcsuite option. no --pbap option is displayed by default.

Hi Liiver!

If you can't see --pbap or obexd is not running as /usr/lib/obex/obexd your

dpkg -i libopenobex1_1.5-2_armel.deb openobex-apps_1.5-2_armel.deb obexd_0.28-0maemo3_armel.deb

command has failed.

Check that you have downloaded all the files correctly and you try to install them from the same place you downloaded them. To install something you must be root.

Hope this helps!

liiver 2010-07-28 18:13

Re: [Announce] Bluetooth PBAP / Carkit support is coming to N900...

everything seems to be ok. download succeeds. installation also succeeds. I am under "sudo gainroot". No errors are dispayed during installation, says setting up blablabla at the end of each installation. it doest matter if i istall all 3 together or 1 by 1. After that i copy this new obexd to /usr/lib/obex/obexd. no errors. then chmod a+x /usr/lib/obex/obexd. also no errors.
But after rebood i check the case with "ps | grep obex" and it shows me one obex process running without --pbap option: :S I dont get it. How can i check my obexd version if i have the correct one in /usr/lib/obex/obexd

Hi,

I build a obexd 0.29 version with a commit reverted, which might bring pc-suite support back: http://git.kernel.org/?p=bluetooth/o...a545cc41dd382t . Since I'm based on linux, I cannot test it.
Attached is the obexd and the patch. Maybe someone gives it a try and posts the resulting /var/log/syslog

Hi liiver!

obexd_0.28-0maemo3_armel.deb should install a file

/usr/share/dbus-1/services/obexd.service

That file has the command to start obexd. File content should be

[D-BUS Service]
Name=org.openobex
Exec=/usr/lib/obex/obexd --nodaemon --opp --ftp --pcsuite --pbap --symlinks --root .obex-root --root-setup /usr/bin/obex-root-setup

Is that file ok?
