What cheap (preferably under 200$, definitely less than $350) midsize (4"-5") WP8 phone with really good screen would you recommend?

Agree 100%. No removable battery = no sell to me. One of my two N900s just came up with the dreaded loose USB port. This time, I don't think I will fix it. So, I am down to one. It may not last long... So, I am starting to look around for a replacement. So far, the Samsung ones are the most appealing, either the Galaxy Note 3 or the Galaxy S5. The things I like are:

- Removable battery.

-Expandable memory (SD card slot).

- Ability to enable Mass Storage mode instead of MTP. I have to verify this with these two models, but this video seems to make this likely: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84O8KlPxEyU

- Fast.

- And of course, tons of apps. :D (Maybe even LibreOffice will one day be usable on Android.)

Yeah...
Word..
haha..
Me ...I've become a spoiled child on the N8x0's and n900...
If I can't use a device I can remove the batt. from...
If I can't put a sd/micro/mini card in for storage...
If I definitely can't use anything but stock device os...
If I definitely can't use a card for alt. os's ...even chrooting..
and if it doesn't have a resistive screen...
I'm not interested...
At All.
Hence I gotta have the neo900..
No option for me. I can't even consider it.
Every other device looks like ...and is as appetizing as cold- leftover-from-last-week... cooked liver, cow-tongue and head-cheese...eeeww :D

I'm most certainly a spoiled brat nothing less will do...been raised on the finest digital caviar and champagne :D

Guys, its possible to remove the battery. It just that you lacks the skill to do it. Sorry to break it to you ;)

Got you :D

Everything is possible, just like the n900 but what is needed here is more Skill or magic or more of both.

LibreOffice works fine on my Note 3. In addition, I've have used linux distributions like Debian, Ubuntu, and Fedora on my Note3. Btw, I first heard about the N900 in one of your blogs about Easy Debian years ago. So you are fully responsible for getting me hooked on running linux distributions on cell phones!

most of the last generation of nokia flagships have gone pretty cheap now. and all of them are getting WP8.1 so they'll remain supported for probably another year (although i don't know how important manufacturer "support" is to us on maemo.org, haha). i looked on ebay and found the lumia 920 (4.5 in 768p screen) for $189 USD in excellent condition, unlocked but AT&T branded. there are other brand new options for about 20 bucks more. similar pricing on the 925 too (same screen, much lighter body, better camera). didn't look on amazon but you could probably find some over there too.
