Solved. Indeed the old configuration was the problem. In the plugin configuration, I had "PatternCommunicationEvent" in the field "MCE LED pattern to use". Changed that to "PatternCommunicationChat"...

The GPE calendar allows to import/subscribe to ical calendars. I successfully imported holiday data from http://www.project24.info . I didn't test actual subscription as holidays don't change that...
