Just a tip if you want to keep you user settings when unpack an new image over and old sailfish image:
cd /media/$USERNAME/Alt_OS/
then remove all directorys except home
that way you keep...

Yes, it will work just fine, you need to use the kernel on your sailfish /boot/ directory of course. (the default Nemo kernel)
However, I thought you had the simlock problem which prevents you...

a) operator sim lock is not unlocked properly
b) end user has set...

I had that issue even though I did not have a sim lock on. You have to do the secure erase option. (If you want to interrupt, that is up to you as this will take a couple of hours!)
